Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

Unable to see image

Camers had not been used for a while, put batteries in, lines appeared in viewfinder, unable to obtain image, problem cleared up for 10-15 photos then returned. The view through the viewfinder and the display is a combination of lines and black shadow, to my knowledge my camera has not taken a knock or been dropped.

Can you offer any advice

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info. I think you'll be very pleased:

    Guest,

Same advice as for jeweller. That definitely appears to be a CCD failure. Canon will fix it for free, and if you check the readers comments in the first link, you'll see that you might just get extremely lucky if you send your S1 IS off to Canon to be repaired under this recall advisory :-) So good luck, and hope you also get an S5 IS in return!

Is there an image showing in the eyepiece/viewfinder? If so, look for and press a small button labeled 'EVF/LCD' to switch the image to the screen.

I can see the images on the camers but unable to download from the memory stick. when i connect to the computer i get message saying format disc. what to do

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Hi,
It is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in few Canon models and your S2 IS got that problem too, ccd imager chip will be replaced to get live view in camera mode to take fresh pictures.
Local camera repair shop will help you to replace ccd imager chip in camera or click Canon CCD Imager Support and talk to them if they can replace it for free.
Hope this info will help you.

I recently purchased the D80 and had no problems, it worked great and took magnificant shots. However, the other day I turned it on and the viewfinder was now, dark and out of focus. The battery was fully...

Check the mirror. The image you see in the viewfinder comes through the lens, and is reflected by the mirror. If it's dirty, it will affect the image you see. When you take the picture, the mirror lifts up, the viewfinder image is interrupted, and the light from the lens goes to the image sensor. So...if the mirror is dirty, the picture will be fine but the viewfinder image will be dark or out of focus.

Unable to focus image in viewfinder

There is a little wheel nest to the viewfinder on the camera. It is called something like dioptric focus (forgive me I am going off of what I heard pronounced) and it allows you to manually set the focus to your eyesight. Just adjust the wheel while looking through the viewfinder and you should be set.

This appears to be a processor problem There is I am afraid no user remedy. Depending on the age of the camera, it is possible that it has been subject to a recall because of defective CCD's- Now get onto Nikon customer support and they will advise you accordingly. They may price a repair - which will be truly astronomical if they do ,so be ready for it.
