Question about Garden

I have a Cub Cadet that wont start.

I have a Cub Cadet 2000 series (Model 2166) that will not start. I have checked the battery (it is charged), 2 fuses that I can see, and the connetions under the seat. I know I am getting power because the lights go on. I get nothing when I turn the key. I do get a ping sound when I turn the key on and turn the choke on and off. Any idea on why I am getting no cranking power (at all) to the engine? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like the starter solenoid to me this quite easy to check and fix. short across the starter solenoid with key on and see if it cranks the . If so just replace that solenoid and you should good to go I have had cubs for about 9 years and the seem to be prone to this as well as there other switches going bad. Suppose you you could say that they aren't built with much longevity in mind. The motor seems to last,as every thing else is suspect.

I have exactly same issue. I used 2166 few weeks back, mowed around an acre and parked in shed. Tried to use it last week but it wouldn't start. Battery, spark plug and fuses are good. Head lights are working.

What exactly is wrong?

Easy check is your cable connections and condition. Next would be to remove the starter and test it. Then check the solenoid.

Check the two main gears. One at the end of the steering shaft and the other that it contacts. Some brands are adjustable where the large gear is held on by a bolt and an excentric which allows you to move the large gear closer to the smaller gear. This may have been knocked out of place or the gear(s) stripped. Here is a basic diagram of the parts.

Can you measure the voltage of the battery? If you are getting low voltage then the battery needs to be charged or replaced, if the voltage is good then you probably have a bad starter. It might be something you can see like shorted windings on the motor.

Hi,
There is a wire shorted to ground (metal) somewhere...check all the wiring for a bare spot somewhere... this is causing the short...repalce the wire and you will be good...

Cub Cadet 2166 series. Mower will not engage.

Unfortunately, the circuit is a little complicated - it involves the "PTO switch" (the switch you pull on to engage the mower), a "reverse switch" that senses if you've put the mower in reverse, and a relay operated by the reverse switch. The reverse switch is there to disengage the blades if you try to reverse while mowing. A failure in any of those items, or the connectors and wiring between them, will prevent the blades from engaging. Unless you want to "shotgun it" and replace parts one-by-one on a guess (which many repairmen to do save time, but at your expense) you need to use an ohmmeter or test light to trace and isolate where the failure is.
