My first response would be to seek help from an electrician or someone qualified to perform this work.
If you are going to attempt it, you will need the following items:
- electrical box
- light switch
- light fixture
- wire ( ask you local hardware store clerk what is recommended or needed to meet code in your area.

Disconnect power at breaker to your source.
From your source,
- connect wires to electrical box. then to;
- connect wires to switch then to;
- connect wires to another box at the fixture
- connect fixture to the box.

box=====switch=====box=fixture.

How to wire in an on-off switch for ceiling light from power source going to living room.

Pretty easy if you can get the wires from the existing wall outlet. Just run a wire from existing outlet to the where you want the new light. Install inside an approved ceiling electrical outlet box and then run another wire to where you want the switch or switches. If you go to home depot or the library you can look at the books with diagrams on how to wire it. You can skip the wall switch if you use a light with a pull chain.

I have a complete garage (sheetrock & wiring already installed). im trying to install a garage door opener. there are 3 wires on the garage ceiling (1 for the wall control, 2 for the photoeyes). but...

Get a continuity tester at Home depot. First, make sure all the conductor wires are separated from each other. Strip back a 1/2" insulation on each conductor (both ends).
Start with the wires at the wall control wire location. Twist the stripped
bare wires together. Now go on the ladder where the 3 cables are
and "ring" out that conductor with the continuity tester. Once that cable is found, tag the wire identifying it as the controller.

Opener has been working fine for four years. Today, when I pressed the remote to get into the garage, the door opened for a few inches, then stopped, and now the motor will not run at all, via the remote...

The problem may not be the garage door opener, To determine this, Pull the emergency release to release the door from the carriage. (The red cord that hangs from the opener) Now you can press your garage door opener to see if your motor works. If it still does not work, try unlpugging the opener from the power source for approx10 seconds. This should reset your motor.

If the motor works, the problem is with door and not the opener and you need to consult a professional who can help you with this.

I've installed a 60-minute Woods timer 12842 (digital) in my garage but it switches itself off prematurely over and over. I notice when it is on the little green 10min timer light clicks & dims ever so...

Open following link to identify timer for sure, download on-line manual, and read wiring instructions.
ttp://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59000

1) Manual says 1000Watt Tungsten (incandescent) and 1000Watt Ballast (fluorescent)
2) Timer is powered by electric circuit and not internal battery, so cold garage temps will not affect operation
3) Check wiring against instructions shown on link above, except your other timers work fine, which indicates correct wiring.
4) Buy cheap circuit analyzer at home center, and test receptacle on same garage circuit
5) Try moving known-good timer to same location and see if problem persists.
6) I test timers, and some in-wall and plug-in timers arrive defective, and some go bad quickly, most have 1 year limited warranty, some last 5-7 years.

I want to fit a light and switch into my new workshop. I have a garage type consummer unit fitted and am not sure how to wire in the light.

I answer questions for free.
I know electric wiring.
However I might not understand your problem.
If I do not understand your problem, add a comment with more information and I will respond.

If I understand correctly you want to add a new switch and a new light in your garage.
And you are starting from scratch with no knowledge.
You are starting with a blank wall.

I do not know what a consummer unit is.
Is that a type of light?

Here's a sketch of the project:
We need an electrical receptacle or wall-plug so we can get electricity.
We need to run a cable from the electrical wall-plug to the switch.
This will bring electricity to your switch.
And then we need to run a cable to the light.

Let's talk about how you get electricity from the wall-plug.
The wall plug has a black and white wire connected to each side.
Your cable has a black and white wire.
You connect your black wire with the black side.
Connect white to the white side.

Now run the cable to your switch.
The cable arrives at the switch.
The cable has a black and white wire.
The switch is wired differently than the wall-plug.
On the switch you connect one black wire.
But the white is not connected to switch.

Now we're ready for the cable going to the light.
The cable to the light has a black and white wire.
Connect the black to the switch.
So now you have 2 black wires connected to the switch.
The black wires are on different screws.
And then connect the two white wires together.

So the switch is wired.
Run the cable to your light.
The cable arrives at the light.
The cable still has a black and a white wire.
Your light will have wires -or- it will have screws.

If light has black and white wires, then connect black to black and white to white.

If your switch has screws, then connect black to brass-screw and white to silver-screw.

6696 Decora Anywhere Switches triggered by other signals

These switches have an RF operating range of about 50', according to the manufacturer's spec. It is unlikely the neighbors are tripping them. Look around your neighborhood for a ham or CB antenna. That could do it.

Also, these switches run through the AAA batteries pretty fast. You might check them.

50' is not much range for an RF signal. You may take a look at Insteon, which have about a 200' range. Also, they create a "dual mesh" signal by mixing RF with the electrical current in the lines in your house.

Wall Lights

Only one socket outlet can be connected to a spur. (This can be a single or double outlet). Connecting a further outlet is NOT permitted, as this could overload the single cable supplying it. Each socket outlet or junction box on the ring can only have one spur connected. Trying to connect two or more is not only very difficult due to the number of wires involved, it can also result in an abnormally high load at that point in the ring.
The number of spurs on the ring must not exceed the number of other socket outlets. If for some reason you need a large number of spurs, it is time to replace the whole circuit rather than keep adding to it.

The only safe way to do this is to run a new circuit from your panel. good luck
