Microsoft's User's License states, "Only One genuine copy of Windows per One computer. Each genuine copy is paid for. Companies often buy a multi-user license. Covers a lot of computers, and each one. When the computer was to be removed from the company, they should have removed their genuine copy of Windows. If not they left the password. To circumvent the password is Stealing. Any other answer to this is Stealing if it involves circumventing the password. The legal option is buy a genuine copy of Windows, and install it.

To get around this problem, Unplug your system then remove the internal battery (Looks like a large round watch battery). Let it set for a minute or two then replace the battery and plug it in. It should start up fine now. It worked great for me, let me know how it works for you. Dan.

Best and easiest way to reset the password is to remove the CMOS battery (resembles a watch battery but larger) for a period of 30min. Once the battery is replaced, boot up and it should boot without asking for a password.

If the machine has Windows XP you can hack the password with numerous utilities however if it's Vista or greater you will not be able to easily login to change the password and need to re-install the system. If passwords could be recovered easily there would be no point in having them to protect your data.

I have been given a Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop but it has password that we don't know . It did not come with any type of cds. I need to wipe it clean but how do I restore the windows xp home edition?

Well, here's the bad news. 1) Windows XP is not supported any more by Microsoft. (2) You need the original CD's that previously installed XP on your computer. If you can't get them from the previous owner, then you'll have to try and find some original CD's and reinstall XP on your machine, from scratch. (3) If your computer has what it needs, an option is to install Windows 7 on your computer - it depends how old your computer is and if it has the necessary hardware.

Here is a little trick to use that may or may not work:
Start the computer in safe mode and log on as administrator. It's surprising how many people set up their XP computers and password protect their profile, but forget to password protect the administrator account. Once in, you can change your password in your own account.

Forgot Windows XP password, don't be worried. It's very common for PC users to lose or forget Windows password as some like to set a rather complicated password. As Windows XP has been used for several years, there are various available methods that can help you to reset Windows XP password.

Otherwise, unauthorized users can log on your computer and get access to the precious data on it. It will be a disaster for you if your privacy is leaked out.

Method 2: Log on as administrator to reset Windows XP password

All Windows XP computers have a special user account named "Administrator" and by default this account is not password protected. If you don't set password for the account or you remember its password, you can log on computer with the administrator account to perform Windows XP password reset.

1. Start the computer.
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice when you see Windows XP login screen.
3. When Log On to Windows dialog box appears, type Administrator in the User name box.
4. Type the administrator password in the password box, and then click OK. Or you can directly click Ok if you don't set password.
5. Click Start > Run > Type control userpasswords2 > click OK.
6. On the Users tab, click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for, and then click Reset Password.
7. Set your new password and click OK on the Reset Password dialog box. And then click OK on user tab.
8. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows again.

Method 3: Burn a USB flash drive to reset Windows XP password

In addition to the two methods above, you can also perform Windows XP password reset with third party Windows password recovery software. It can help you reset Windows XP login password by burning a bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive. Before starting to perform Windows XP password reset with this method, you need to find a computer with optical driver that you can log on. Then, you can follow the below steps to burn a USB flash drive with Windows Login Recovery.

1. Download Windows Login Recovery and install it.
2. Burn the ISO image file on the program to a USB flash drive.
3. Set your locked computer to boot from USB drive.
4. Reset forgotten Windows XP password with the burned USB flash drive.

The above 3 methods are easy for you to reset Windows XP password. Of course, method to perform Windows XP password reset is not limited to the 3 options. There are still other options for you, like using a Windows installation disc to recover Windows XP password. You just find one suits you best to reset your lost Windows XP password.

Password Protect Folders in XP
To password protect a folder built into Windows XP (for other Windows flavors, there are some freeware/shareware programs out there).
If you have a log in password for your account, this can be used to protect folders from other users. If not, you need to creat one. Your hard drive must be formatted using NTFS (which it probably is unless you're dual booting with another operating system). Here's what to do...
Right-click the folder that you want to make private and choose "Properties" (or Alt+Double-click). Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the "Make this folder private" box.
private-folder1.jpg
Click Apply . If you do not have a password on your account, a box will pop up asking if you want to assign a password. This must be done if you want to make the folder private, so click Yes . You will need to use your password to log on to your computer from then on.
Type in a password then confirm it. Click the "Create Password" button then close the Password window.
Click OK in the Properties dialog box.
Now anyone else logged on to your computer can't access that file without knowing your password.
