Option #1:
Boot from your Windows Vista DVD and select Repair your Computer -> Startup Repair.

Option #2:
Boot from your Windows Vista DVD and select Repair your Computer -> Command Prompt, execute the following commands:
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
Reboot.

Option #3:
At the prompt to select your OS installation, click the button that says ‘Load Drivers’. This should bring up a explorer-style drive browser. Then just right-click on the drive you tried to compress, and deselect ‘Compress this Drive’, which should still be ticked on. Hit apply, and apply to subfolders/files.
Reboot.

c:
expand bootmgr temp
attrib bootmgr -s -r -h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr -a +s +r +h
Reboot.(If the 2nd line fail, go back to 1st line and replace C with the drive letter of where your windows is installed.)

Bootmgr is part of the registry key produced by your computer for your computer and it is not there as it is from another computer.
Either run a fresh Win7 OS disc or Vista disc to fix that problem. In the old days it didn't matter but Microsoft has got wise to copies now and it is reflected in the registry.

When I start the PC it says "BOOTMGR is missing"

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, and then restart the computer.
2.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted.
3.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4.Press 1 (One) to select windows XP and then hit enter.
5.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
6.At the command prompt, Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd and then press ENTER.
7.If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully. 8.If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

I think you need to open it in dos Mode.. You have to restart it PRESS F8 when restart is starting And select open in command prompt ...

NOTE:You have to go BIOS option for selecting boot from USB too (To enter DOS mode you may press DEL key /F2 when booting is abt to starting or in progressing)
OR format XP using Xp cd
OR insert any boot able cd(strongly recommend that it can possible to enter in Dos MODE{Win 98 CD is ready to enter in DOS mode}) Now you can change to any Drive even USB By using command CD space drive letter

Cannot restart laptop

"Boot with the Vista DVD, when it enters Setup hit your SHIFT-F10 keys Setup will run "cmd", and drops you to a command prompt that is running with SYSTEM privileges.

Then at the command prompt type the following (hitting <enter>) after each line.:

attrib bootmgr -s -r -h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr -a +s +r +h
"

hope this helps! :)
