How to allow ping request through Norton Internet Security 2010 Smart Firewall

When Norton Internet Security is installed it will take over control of the Windows Firewall. So if you need to make changes to the computers firewall you will need to make the changes in Smart Firewall.

Below is the steps that you will need to go through to allow incoming echo Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) traffic through the Smart Firewall.

Note these are the Windows Vista and Windows 7 steps. If you have Windows XP the begining steps may be different but the final options you are looking for should be the same.

1. Click Start - Programs - Norton Internet Security - Norton Internet Security

2. Click on the "Settings" link in the Network section

3. Scroll down until you see the "Smart Firewall" section

4. Click on the "Configure" link for the Program Control option

5. Scroll down until you see the "TCP/IP Ping Command" option and click on the drop down to change it to "Allow".

6. Apply, then OK

At this point you should be able to ping this computer from another computer in the network. If you still have trouble you may want to check your other network settings and make sure you do not have any other programs that could be blocking ping requests to the computer.

I HAVE 20 COMPUTERS CONNECTED THROUGH LAN SYSTEM HAVING XP SERVICE PACK 2 & 3 OS. I HAVE INSTALLED NORTON 2010 ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE ON EACH SYSTEM 10-11 MONTHS BACK. I HAVE ERP-SYSTEM IN FOXPRO FOR DOS ON MOST OF THE SYSTEMS. FROM THE LAST 1-2 MONTHS DOS BASED PROGRAMS (I.E. ABOVE MENTIONED ERP-SYSTEM) IS GETTING HANGED. PLEASE HELP.

Dear Walia,

We need to check weather you are getting any error message while trying to access the Network Computers..
Could you please go through the following steps and check weather you are getting any error message or Dos system getting hanged..

Disable the Norton program from the First 2 systems and try to access the Computers with Ping command...

To use the ping command please open the Command prompt and type ping [ip address of the Second system] ...

If u can access the Computers after disable the Norton program means surely it due to the issue with the Norton firewall...

In that case we need to create the New firewall rule for the Norton program to access the Specific Application

Thanks

How to allow ping (ICMP Echo) request through Windows 7 Firewall If you need to know how to access the Windows 7 Firewall and the basic info on the operation of the firewall the link below will cover this for you. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5088048-check_windows_7_firewall_settings The below process will cover enabling ping requests through the Windows Firewall. 1. After you are in the Windows 7 Firewall you will need to select "Advance Setting" on the left hand side of the window. 2. Click on Inbound Rules 3. Next you will need to scroll down the list until you see "File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-In)". Note in Windows 7, Microsoft moved the rule under the File and Printer Sharing section. So if you are trying to find the rule for Windows Vista you will want to look under Networking. 4. After you find the listing you will need to right click and select Enable Rule. Note you will see the listing for each network profile. So you will want to do this for each one. Also at this time you do not need to enable the ICMPv6-In rule because ICMPv6 is not current used as a standard. 5. Click on the red "x" to close the Windows Firewall with Advance Security window. You should now beable to send ping requests through the Windows 7 Firewall. ----------------------------------------------------- Other Helpful Links How to allow ping request through Norton Internet Security 2010 Smart Firewall How to check and change you computer IP address in Windows 7 How to enable and disable printer and file sharing in Windows 7 How to take file ownership in Windows 7 and Windows Vista How to change your drive letter in Windows Vista and Windows 7 How to determine your computer's MAC address

I can ping the gateway and router IP addresses and get access to the internet from both pc's but one pc cannot oing the other. Their ip's are 192.168.0.107 and 192.168.0.165 and are DHCP assigned. How can I get the 2 PC's to talk to each other?

Check your firewall on both machines - make sure that the firewall has the other computer listed as a trusted machine. What OS are the computers running? Do you have sharing enabled (for the desired files in Windows OS)?

I hope this helps.

(who runs a Win7 network and the firewall trust issue meant that the printer connected to one computer (Win7 64-bit) was unseen by the other computers (64-bit and 32-bit) until that was reset. The location of the setting will depend on the firewall software. In Norton Internet Security 2010, it's Network Settings, Smart Firewall, Advanced, Trust.)

unable to download norton internet security 2010 from cd.

Hi, sometimes when you have up a Firewall, it will prevent software from downloading; its being blocked! Go to: Control Panel / Security; click, (Allow a program through Windows Firewall). You should be able to install Nortons 2010. Thanks paul7of9
