Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a 1937 Johnson 4.2 HP Outboard Motor LT-37 Serial # 273761. The engine is seized and I am looking for info on the best way to free it. I've started by putting marvel mystery oil down the spark plug cylinders. Any hints and help would be appreciated. Thank you. Ron massauto

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure whether it's the engine or the lower unit. The unit was standing in an upright position for many years.

Do you think it is the engine or the lower unit? If the engine has set up for a long time it may be the lower unit or the prop gearing. Pull the bottom loose at the flange be-careful of any parts you take off and try and turn the engine then. If it still does not turn you could have seized piston or a rod. You will have to dissemble the engine to find out which. Even if you think it is rust in the cylinder it may have to be forced to move and honed out. If you find it is in the lower unit you are better off but it is not a cheep fix. Bearings and steel shafts in an aluminum housing with a lot of corrosion do not come apart easy.

What Year, HP, and Model is my Evinrude Outboard Motor with Serial Number 10812

Try MFG website, or their customer service email.
You may find fellow owners that have created an online "club" and they will have the information for you. It sounds like an early model. Wiki may have information about the complete series, similar to the details they usually have about cars.

What year is a johnson 4 hp outboard serial number b 7643180 model number bj4brccs

To get the year of Johnson and Evinrude outboards use the word "INTRODUCES". Each letter corresponds to "1234567890" respectfully. It's best to check with a model year reference book, but this motor's model number contains "CC" which would indicate it's a '88.

What could I damage on my boat fuel line? Primer bulb, any filter ... ?

There could be several reasons. I'd first look at stuck floats in the carbs. I believe there's 3 carbs and if all spark plugs are wet all floats are sticking.

But assuming it didn't overheat, and the spark plugs are wet with fuel (as opposed to water) - sometimes a defective coil will short out only when it gets warm (most time they short all the time). They can be tested.

A very good mechanic once told me there are only four things to concentrate on: Suck, Squish, Bang, and Blow. In other words, Fuel delivery, Compression, ignition system/spark, and proper exhaust. My experience has been that I've never had to worry about Blow (knock on wood) with an outboard. Others have however.

Additional advice: The number 1 cause of outboard problems is gas. Todays fuels are great for fuel injected cars but break down sooner than old gas mixtures. Always put a fuel stabilizer in you tank. It's cheap and only takes a few ounces to protect from hundreds of dollars worth of carb work - and avoid sticky floats.
