Question about KitchenAid 24 in. KUDS01FLSS Built-In Dishwasher

Dishwasher won't run a full cycle

Had a problem a couple of months ago with the clean light flashing 7 times, had repair person out (when still under warranty), he reset and let us know how to reset. Worked great for a couple of weeks then the door link broke (string that goes around the pulley at the bottom of the door). Ordered the part and fixed that. Worked fine for a few days. Now having problems that when we go to start the dishwasher it either won't run (you can hear it start and stop after just a few seconds/minute), or it will run part of a cycle (runs about 1/2hr) - and the dishes are hot (so its not the heating element), but still soapy or dirty. Now of course the warranty has run out. Not sure what the problem could be - the keypad? the door latch?

    ??????

The blinking clean light is no longer a problem.

I took off the bottom service panel and did not find a tech sheet, so have no idea what you are talking about. Please suggest another solution. Thanks.

The blinking clean light is no longer a problem. Had a suggestion to take off the bottom service panel and find the tech sheet - it was not there - so that was not any help.

  • lauramcd Apr 27, 2010

The control panel looks like it is still running (still on the original settings), however the dishwasher has stopped its cycle.

  • lauramcd Apr 27, 2010

The dishwasher keypad indicates the dishwasher is still running (still on the original settings, no blinking lights), but the dishwasher has stopped going through its cycle.

  • lauramcd Apr 27, 2010

Can't seem to "reply" to the expert that has given me advice...keeps asking me to accept or reject the advice - but there is no reject button.
The answer to the last expert question - the dishwasher seems to think it is still running (the keypad still shows the cycle it is running, no flashing lights), but the dishwasher has stopped running its full cycle.

    To FixAllPhil,

I didn't reject your advice about the motor, my computer won't let me reply to you for some reason. My Model number is: kuds01flss6, Serial number: fs1133710

    Thanks for your help.

  • lauramcd Apr 27, 2010

Ok, so I ran this diagnostic test. It is the same key sequence to reset the blinking clean light. I pressed this key sequence, and all the lights came on. I closed the dishwasher, the normal light came on then the rinse only light, then the normal light, then the rinse only. It ran for a couple of seconds, then the normal light comes on, the the rinse only, then the normal light, then the rinse only again. It runs for a minute or two, then the normal light (continues running), then the rinse only, runs another minute or so, then stops with no lights. Is this the info you needed?

  • lauramcd Apr 27, 2010

If it is the motor, I don't think I will replace it - not worth it, as it seems like this dishwasher is a lemon anyway (by other problems posted here) - and will likely replace the whole dishwasher. The cost of just the motor is about half of the price of a new dishwasher. I am not sure if it is the motor, I am still thinking it may be the door latch (by looking at all the problems the other dishwashers had).

    Thanks anyway for your help.

Sounds like either the door switch is bad, or the cable/string on pulley connected to the door is loose or broken or not placed properly. Also a plugged drain will cause a no start or no drain, but if it isn't doing anything,, then it's likely to do with the door.

Above is a generic service manual, troubleshoot and repair, this is what the engineers use to repair these devices.
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/dishwasher/dishwasher.php
http://www.applianceaid.com/dishwash.html
http://www.repairclinic.com/Dishwasher-Repair-Help
DIY repair sites and how to find and fix problems. below is another very helpful site.
http://www.appliancerepair.net/apnet/frameset?http://www.appliancerepair.net/apnet/dish/index.htm
This BELOW Fix,may or many BOT apply, however it is simply amazing how many units respond to this remedy..for whatever reason. Ok so your dishwasher won't do anything... it justs sits there and "Hums" you can't make it respond to any controls, and the ONLY way to Stop it. is to unplug the unit, replugging back in it simply "Hums" again and will do nothing.
Now this happens because, the STOP Button, is pressed and the "Door Opened", during the Wash Cycle. This should NOT be done. You shouldNEVER TURN IT OFF MID-CYCLE. you should instead, Simply, pull on the handle, to Open the door, the system will take care of everything, after, you close it,and pick up where it left off. The turning OFF, makes the machine "Think" that a New Cycle, is going to be done, before the old one is finished, and resets itself to do it all again. But it still has water, that's not meant to be there so it must dump it out.
Now, the FIX. Take the Dishwasher, out, and tip over on it's side, tip to about a 45' angle. Water will come out from underneath, this is from a small "Overflow" reservoir. this reservoir has an "Anti-Flood" switch. The removing of this water will "Reset" this Switch, and allow the dishwasher to work again.
So what happens, is this, when the STOP button is pressed Mid-Cycle, the machine must "Dump" whatever water is still in the machine, into the "Overflow Reservoir". This water then causes the Anti-flood switch to jam, and this stops the machine, until it is reset,by the above method.

Hi,

This is Phil, I will attempt to help you through this problem that is happening with the dishwasher. To do so can I need to ask a question or two.

When you say it shuts down after maybe a 1/2 hour of running, what tells you it stopped running? Do all the lights go out, do any of them flash as in a code, or does it appear to be running by the control panel and the washing noise stops?

Sorry if these are questions you have answered before but I do not have line of site to previous questions and I want to make sure I am accurate when giving you advice.

Thanks!

Thank you very much for the quick response.

Since the start light is not blinking and it seems to stall in the first 1/2 hour or earlier (time and soap on the dishes) I would strongly suspect the motor is overheating and turning off on it's overload protector.

The dishwasher will heat the water during the wash cycle and the motor needs to run to spray water across the heat element as the element is not submersed. If the motor is not running to pump the water the water never gets hot enough to continue the cycle hence the stalling.

If you can look just inside the door on either the right side or left there is a tag with model and serial numbers, if you could send those to me I can get you a part number for the motor assembly.

    Hi this is Phil again,

Sorry that you rejected my comments on the motor I do believe that is the are too look.

I hope you can get this issue resolved quickly. Thank you

    Hi,

Phil here, sorry for the confusion, I got an email from our leaders saying I was rejected, not sure what happened, so sorry.

Here is the part number for the motor alone 8535150

Here is the part number for the motor and pump assembly 8534942

If you need a tech sheet or service manual let me know

  • Philip Apr 27, 2010

The diagnosis you ran sounds normal in sequence, here is a clip from the tech sheet showing what loads should be running during those intervals. I do not think we need to go into the diagnosis further from the symptoms you have described I am confident it is the motor.

if your on demand heater is one of the small ones that mounts under the sink, it will not flow enough water to fill your dishwasher. the dishwasher is waiting for the water level to fill before it starts washing. your bosch will heat its own water. hook it up to a cold line ahead of the water heater so that the fill valve is fed with full pressure. the residue sounds like detergent build up. when you get the water issue resolved, run a few cycles with no dishes and no detergent, on the highest temp setting. add a cup or two of white vinegar or dishwasher cleaner ( order online or get from an appliance repair store) through it. Dont forget your dishwasher has a filter in the bottom under the spray arm that needs to be cleaned periodically. if you dont clean it once a month it will get all kinds of nasty stuff built up in there.

Dishwasher is locked out. Clean light flashes 7

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If the clean light flashes 7 times, pauses, and then repeats. When the dishwasher doesn't sense a water temperature increase, it stops working and locks the functions (clean light flashes 7 times, all buttons are non responsive). It does this as a safety in case the element is broken and feeding electrical current into the water.

To resolve this you will have to reset the console. Do this by closing the door and press these buttons in sequence...

-high temp wash

-heated dry
-high temp wash
-heated dry

All the lights will turn on briefly and the machine will start a diagnostic cycle. You can press cancel or let the diagnostic cycle finish (1-2 minutes). You should now be able to run the dishwasher as normal. If the issue returns, you could have a problem with the heating circuit (i.e. element, thermostat or wiring). It rarely happens but it could also be the door switch not engaging properly when the door is closed (slightly bend the door latch down making sure it doesn't hit the door when you close it). Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Light flashing

reset the dishwasher by touching heated dry and normal let it run through that cycle then through a normal cycle got the error blink again. Reset dishwasher by touching heated dry and normal, ran the test cycle, next ran a normal cycle but turned off the heated dry. This allowed the dishwasher to run through a complete cycle did not get the error blink and confirmed that the heating element was out.
