Question about Heating & Cooling

My Carrier 38CKB048 continues to run even when the Thermostat is set to off or to heat. I can only shut it off by pulling the fuse outside by the unit.

Carrier heat pump (basic model) runs at 0 or below


A basic model heat pump with an air handler with electric strip heat generally will continue to run with a call for heat regardless of the outdoor air temperature unless there was an outdoor thermostat (an accessory) installed. There is still heat in the outdoor even at temperatures of zero and below. Generally, there is a balance point of approx 30-35degF that allows the heat pump to heat your house to 68degF without the need for the electric heaters. Below that, the heat pump can still extract heat from outside and "pump" it into your house; however, it will need help from the electric heaters. In temperatures below the balance point, the heat pump will run non-stop. As the temperature in the house falls approx 1 - 2 degF below the setpoint, the electric heaters will energize. So it is not uncommon for the system to run non-stop with the temperature falling a few degrees below setpoint. The colder the outside temperature, the more often the strip heaters will cycle on/off. If your system is well-maintained and operating at proper performance, it is still cheaper to run your heat pump than it is to run on straight electric heat. If you live in a climate where below zero temperatures are normal during the winter months, you might want to research heat pump options that offer higher COP's and increased performance in colder temperature than the basic contractor's model. Start with initiating communication with a local contractor. You will need to consider initial cost and the pay-back period based on your local energy costs and your specific demands you want your system to meet.

Carrier 38CKC042300. oUTSIDE UNIT FAN WAS TURNING REAL SLOW. ac UNIT IS OFF BUT FAN TO OUTSIDE UNIT IS STILL TURNING. sHOULD NOT BE TURNING AT ALL WITH AC UNIT OFF


The outside fan may run if the unit is in defrost mode this is normal for most heat pumps it is there way of trying to keep the outside unit from staying iced over so the next time the unit runs it will have air flow through the coil and the ice will not be there to prevent air flow.

Try checking the switch, you may need to have it replaced. Your heating system is still okey, but the
fan continues running even when switched off, Is this
what you mean? Then, have your switch checked, especially the electrical line going to the fan.

the contactor is stuck you might try killing the breaker to the condensing unit if it stops then it is the contactor

On A/C units, there is a low voltage line that leads to a contactor, which engages to close the high voltage circuit to the condensor unit. Over time, the accual contacts in the contactor can weld themselves together. Try shutting off your furnace breaker but leaving on the one for the outside condensor unit. If it still runs, your contactor probably needs replaced. Contact a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor and tell them you think your contactor is in need of replacement. Is a fairly simple and quick replace, but the contactor itself is not cheap.

Furnace runs but won't ignite.


Error code 12 is blower on after power up. Meaning: after you turn on power to the furnace for aprox. 60-90 seconds the blower will run. The blower should then shut down and the furnace should go through the start up process, providing that the thermostat is set for and calling for heat. If the furnace fails to start after blower shut down there should be a new fault/error code. However if the blower continues to run longer then 90 seconds and continues with the same fault code more then likely the circuit board is bad. I have a carrier infinity system. On the thermostat it reads "sens error" where the outdoor temp is normally displayed. The inside unit is running but the outside unit is not. Any suggestions?


A burned or pitted contactor will/can cause a unit to not run. Outside fan. Just thinking out loud. Start with low voltage check at t.stat then check outside low volt. Set t.stat to on. If fan engages at least your transformer is good. Next set calling for cool. Drop t.stat 68-70. If nothing happens go outside and with a screwdriver depress the contactor in. If fan and compressor kicks in change the contactor. If contactor is pulled in check outside fan. Remove the wires from the compressor and see if the fan will run . If it does you have eliminated start components as good. The compressor has to be check. It needs to be ohmed out. Turn off power at disconnect. Pull the cover on the compressor. Check between pins; then pins to ground. Open or infinite is good.Have you checked fuses. Like small 3-5 amp fuses

Air Conditioner malfunction


Hi, Sounds like you have a short in the control circuit to me. Turn off all power going to the unit. Write down or otherwise mark the wires leaving the control board going to the thermostat. Remove them from the control board. Replace the fuse. Turn power back on and see if the fan still runs. If it does, check and or replace the heat limit switch that brings the fan on during the heat cycle. It may just need adjusted. If the fuse blows, I would think that the control board is probably bad. If it doesn't blow, Remove the thermostat. Leaving all thermostat wires open check them with an Ohm meter. There should be no continuity between them. Twist all the wires together at one end and ohm them again at the other end. You should have complete continuity on all wires. If the wiring checks out, down power the unit. Double check your wire colors and rewire the control board. With all wires open at the thermostat, turn the power back on. Touch the RED wire to the YELLOW wire. The Condensing unit should come on. Touch the RED wire to the GREEN wire. The fan should come on. Touch the RED wire to the WHITE wire. The heat should come on. Down power the unit. Replace the thermostat. Test unit. If the fuse has lasted ok but blows now it is either wired wrong at the Thermostat or the thermostat is bad. I hope I have helped. Sounds like you either blew a transformer, have a bad circuit breaker or blew the main fuse in the outside disconnect. If the indoor unit is still blowing air (no matter what temperature) start looking at the power supply to the outdoor unit. From the circuit breaker, the power will go to a small box located within a few feet from the outside unit. This box will have either a lever on the side or you will be able to open the box and pull out the fuses. From this box the power goes to the condensor. The first thing you should do is to turn off the breaker to the outside unit. Flip it back on and if you have a call for cooling, after about 3 minutes the outdoor unit should start. If it does not, shut off power again to the unit by switching off the breaker, go outside and pull out the fuses in the disconnect box. Using a multi meter, check for continuity thru the fuses. If you have continuity, call your technician. If one or both fuses show no sign of continuity, replace the fuse(s). Make sure that the thermostat is working and sending a signal to the indoor air handler. You may be able to check this by turning the fan switch to "Fan" and see if the blower turns on. You may just have a bad thermostst. Caution should be used anytime you are near electrical components. If you do not have the skill-set required to test electrical equipment, leave it to a proffessional.
