The pproblem is in your defrost system You have to check the defrost timer, Heating elements, and defrost thermostat. The coils have to be clean to have air flow to the refriderator side.

Have a GE side by side gsh22sgress unit. Child left freezer door open. Unit ran for days (in non-occupied appartment). Meat thawed. Cleaned unit inside with mild soapy mix. Unit runs but will not cool...

Open door let too much moisture into refrigerator. (The cooling coils, behind the back wall of the freezer compartment, are blocked with frost) If you unplug the refrig for a day or so it will work again, or you can take the back wall out from inside the freezer and melt the frost with a hair blower.

Freezer is not freezing and refridgerator is not cold enough

Hi,

A refrigerator or freezer that is cooling, but cooling poorly, may have a problem in one of several areas:

Evaporator coils
Condenser
Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt.

Evaporator coils Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets.

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited.

Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system:

  • The defrost timer

  • The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)

  • The defrost heater

If it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level or the compressor. You may need to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician to further diagnose the problem

Condenser Self-defrosting refrigerators all have a set of coils and a cooling fan, usually under the refrigerator, that need to be cleaned regularly. If these coils get coated with dust, dirt or lint, the refrigerator may not cool properly. The coils may appear to be a thin, black, wide radiator-like device behind the lower kick-panel. To clean them, disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, use a refrigerator condenser brush (see the Appliance Accessories section) and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to all of the condenser from the front, it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator.

Frost build up in freezer

The frost is preventing the evaporator fan from circulating the air.
Check that it is operating properly - and thaw out condenser if needed.
A hair dryer will work good.
Verify the fan is operational after thawing.

Freezer section warming up refridgerator section cooling down

if you have frost on the back panel of the freezer section then it is not defrosting properly and items to check for is the defrost heater assy good, is the bi-metal thermostat ok or the main mother board try this unplugged unit for at least 1 min then plug back in see if this will resolve if not then until a repairman can come you can empty the freezer and useing a hairdryer thaw the freezer section...... only if you see frost on the back panel it is much easier to thaw if you remove the screws holding on the back panel...

Model GSS25KGPHBB - Refridgerator side is not cooling and the freezer side is not freezing. No ice is being made. Everything has thawed.

Is there frost on the inside rear wall of the freezer ? If so , then you have a defrost problem . To resolve this , would be a lengthy process . If no frost on panel , then the main control board , is bad , not telling the compressor to come on . This part number is WR55X10656 . Sometimes , you can remove the control board , look on the opposite side ( the soldered side ) , just behind the small black boxes , and see a solder joint which has become unsoldered . Use a soldering tool and solder , to re solder . If no visible " spot " , then replace the board . If there is frost build up on the rear wall , please reply back , and I'll advise how to check components to find the defrost problem .

GE regrigerator not cooling or freezing

first defrost it by turning it off for 1\2 to 1 full day,put towels on the floor to catch the water, when a refridgerator gets frosted up it cant circulate the cold air,and if its one with the freezer on top then the cold air cant blow down into the refridgerator, check inside the refridgerator at the top where the thermostat cover is there will be a vent hole,it could have ice built up so much that its totally blocking the air flow. This usually happens when hot food is put in the refridgerator and causes steam,or the refridgerator runs too much caused by bad door seals,or the cooling fins on the back or bottom underneath plugged with dust and the freon gets too hot causing condensation inside the freezer which causes it to frost up,a plugged drain hole will back up water and freeze, the fan in the freezer may have stopped working, which is about a $60.00 part, and finally a bad defrost element (about a $40.00 part)which is a glass tube inside the freezer with a coiled up wire inside it that heats up at certain times to defrost any ice build up,(which is the last thing to check)

Fridge side not working freezer frost on back at first now not freezing hardly at all

If you still have the frost build up on the back wall of the freezer, your problem is in the defrost circuit. You'll find a bad heater, terminator or control.

Also verify operation of the evaporator (freezer) fan.

We have a side by side maytag plus refridgerator freezer that has frost on and behind the back panel of the inside of the freezer. Everyting started to thaw. This happened to us before and we were told...

Unplugging and letting it completely thaw out is not the answer to your problem in the long run. You have a problem in the defrost system. These problems are normally cause by the following; The defrost timing device has failed. If it is a timer it can normally be located near the temperature control area. It will have a hole in the plastic cover through which you can access the clutch head screw. Turn the screw Clockwise very SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. that will put the system into the defrost mode. Wait about 25 minutes and the defrost of the freezer coil should happen. If the system does not restart and defrost happens, turn the timer again one audible click and the system will restart cooling. (Replace the timer). If the system restarts after the time period and defrost does not take place your problem is in the heater or defrost thermostat. Back wall must be removed inside the freezer to access these components.
