You may want to stick with the same manufacturer as the drive you now have.
The Toshiba site lists the drive as ATA.
The RPM speed should not matter as long as it is 5400 or higher.
You can get some good deals from reputable on-line stores

Replace hard drive

You need to find a guide for your specific laptop and open the shell. You'll need to look up guides for your specific laptop to know how to get to the hard drive itself. Yes it is possible, but you should only do it if you really want to upgrade or your hard drive is damaged.

My hard disk was 320gb crashed..now i want to upgrade to a 500gb hdd...i need to know where to purchase it and what kind to buy.

The price you will pay to have a new hard drive installed into your laptop is going to cost you a pretty penny.. you are honestly better off buying a new laptop. However if you want to keep this one I would suggest you go to a locally owned computer shop and give them the run down of your situation. There are a few benefits to doing this:

1) Supporting locally owned businesses is always good

2) They are not going to upsell you and get you to buy things you don't need

3) Generally very honest people!

They may be able to salvage any files from your old 320GB hard drive and transfer them to your new one as well. Your best option though I think is to see your local computer shop and see what they can do for you!

Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop: I want to know what kind of case a dell has. I'm p...

The Dimension 5150 has a BTX case, which is nearly impossible to upgrade. The motherboard is NOT interchangeable (with a few exceptions, but none of which are true upgrades).

If you have a PCI Express slot, you can upgrade the video card but do not get a card that requires an additional power cable directly from the power supply. This is because the stock power supply is very weak and doesn't have outputs for additional cards. If the card requires no additional power, you should be fine.

You can upgrade your processor with the P4 [Prescott] 5xx or 6xx Series Processors with HT. The 5150 does not support core 2 duo processors. Depending on what you currently have, this may or may not be worthwhile. Also note that higher power processors run at higher temps, which sometimes causes a noticeable increase in fan noise.

The hard drive is easily upgradeable. Just buy any standard sized SATA hard drive. Your computer case supports two drives, so you could keep your current drive and just add a second drive. Remember to buy a SATA cable with the new drive because new drives usually don't come with them.

Overall, if you're looking to get outstanding performance, get a new computer. BTX computers are not gaming computers. You'll end up dumping money into this thing just to get a lousy increase in performance.

2 important things
1 the rpm should not be faster than the original hard drive and 2 you need to update the DMI afterwards so you can reinstall the OS

Upgrade my Dell Dimension 4400 Service Tag 43L5811

You can upgrade to practically the maximum available amount of harddrive space as long as the new drive is IDE. The following picture shows the drive you require:

A guide to replace a hard disk for this PC is available here.

As a rule of thumb, you should buy the maximum size hard disk you can afford as it improves the performance.

You can choose from any brand but choose the one with maximum warranty.

PS. There is no need to go into any kind of numbers; just ask the vendor to give you a certain size IDE hard drive eg a 250GB Western Digital IDE hard drive.

Go to Crucial.com and install their configuration utility through your browser. They will tell you what you have and all the combinations you can do to max out your system. Look at the specs of the RAM and you can get it from Crucial or some other vendor.

First, you will not be able to upgrade the video card on your laptop, since video cards for laptops are specifically designed to fit onto the motherboard and the design of the laptops body.

Secondly, sound cards as well are also deisgined that way, some sound cards on laptops are built in to the mother board and higher end sound card for laptops are specifically designed to fit onto the motherboard and the laptop's body.

Hard Drives on the other hand can be upgraded to a higher capacity but you can't add an additional Hard Drive. I have checked the specs of your laptop has 80GB IDE. You can upgrade to 120GB IDE or higher if you like. Just make sure that you purchase a 2.5" HDD (5400RPM/7200RPM speeds).

Here are examples of Hard drivers that you need for upgrade. I checked newegg.com for available laptop hard drive. You can check other online stores or other computer shops near you if you as well.

Buyin RAM for laptops are a little but tricky so you can just go to the link below for specific memory upgrade for your laptop (I suggest that you purchase 2 pcs of 1GB since your system can accomodate up to 2GB).

Need to increase hard drive and memory

Easier said than done...

If you have the specifications of your current memory, you should be able to find higher capacity compatible RAM at any computer or office supply store. If you can find the right kind, then you simply need to buy it and put it in. Older and more rare types you may need to order via internet.

Upgrading the hard drive can be a tough process. Some drives used to come with upgrading software right on the drive (like Maxtor for example) but they don't seem to do that any more. So, besides buying the right type (either PATA or SATA connector) drive, and the size you want, you have to check your system specs to see how large a drive you can put in, older systems are limited. In addition, you would need to buy hard drive duplicating software, like Powerquest Drive Image.

To see the process of upgrading a drive, I found a page for you, as the details are quite extensive...
