The clutch can be done by unbolting the transmission from the engine after removing the drive shafts, support mounts and linkages and then sliding the transmission to the side resting between the subframe and inner guard. There is not a great deal of room to work with but the job can be done without removing the engine.

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 5 speed and my rpms seem to always be high weather I'm driving n town, 4th gear 30 mph 2100 rpm, or on the highway 5th gear 70 mph and rpms at 3100. This I'm sure is killing my gas...

check clutch for slipping condition, mayb due to worn clutch disc or a oil contaminated disc or a weak pressure plate not locking disc to flywheel therefore giving u a slipping condition and higher than normal rpms

My 1993 mazda 626 5 speed; the rpm's are going crazy and you can hear it in the engine; it also feels sluggish; any thoughts

Yes, your clutch has failed and is slipping.

Get it replaced. This requires
  • removal of the transmission
  • removal and resurfacing of the flywheel
  • replacement of the clutch place, pressure plate and release bearing
and 4-5 hours of labour.

What is the problem when clutch feels loose and gears wont engage

You need to add the clutch fluid (open the engine area and see a place where the Fluid is placed) coz it might be empty or low. It should now be the empty bottle. Please tell me if it was of help

I am assuming it's a standard. Your clutch and pressure plate are slipping. Check to see if the clutch can be adjusted , if not they have to be replaced

How to replace a clutch on a 1991 Subaru Loyale

If you're a home mechanic, this job is simply too difficult to do. Unless you have a transmission jack and an engine hoist, this task is better put in the hands of a mechanic with a professional garage. However, if you do have these tools, you will find the clutch at your local auto parts dealership and sometimes the how-to information is enclosed with the part. If not, purchase a Hane's manual that is specific to your car. Remember, though, heavy tool set will be required.
