More than likely a small passage way in the carb is clogged. You can try some carb cleaner, but you may need to disassemble the carb and clean it out. Be advised that these passageways are sometimes as fine as a human hair, and almost impossible to clear sometimes. A new carb may be required if it is worth it to you. Sorry.

It is obviosly fuel starvation, have you actually replaced the fuel filter on the end of the hose in the tank? try richening the fuel mixture by unscrewing the H and L screw on the carb 1/4 turn on each, you may need a special tool to grip and turn these.

Starting procedure for stihl 012 av

Full choke, stop switch on run. Pull rope handle 3-4 times or more until it "tries to start" (it will not start, but it will try to for a split second) move the choke lever to the half-choke position and without pulling the throttle, poll the rope handle until the engine fires and runs for 4-5 seconds then fully open the choke to the run position, let it warm up for 25-30 seconds (don't forget to let it cool down about 45-60 seconds before you turn it off!) and then proceed to use it.

Runs only on half choke

Before you take it a part adjust the fuel air mixture most of these small engines are air 1 1/4 and fuel 1 turn get it to ideal just before the foot spins ( let the engine warm up good and have fresh fuel before doing these adjustments) afer a good ideal adjust the mixture for a full no bogging speed . If this does not work then start to work on the carb.

Poulan ppd350 starts fine but I have to put choke on half way to run

Fuel starvation, start with simple stuff first, reolace the fuel filter in the tank, check the fuel hoses up to the carb for splits, cracks or signs of leaking, if no better there is dirt in the carb itself.

Mantis only runs with choke half on.

Try fuel with 30% injector cleaner (or 25% auto transmission fluid) Something is clogging the fuel route.

The weed cutter will run ok on half choke but stop if choke is turned off to get full rpm,s

In most cases , if your having to use the choke to keep it running after it is warmed up, it could be the fuel filter needs to be changed. That is the first step. The choke is designed to shoot fuel into chamber a the engine warms up, the choke should go off. If a fuel filter is partially clocked it will restrict the fuel to flow freely to the engine. That means the choke has to do exactly that choke the engine. So herenis what I would do if it was mine, replace the fuel filter, air filter and make sure you good full oil and specially fresh gas. Not gas that has been sitting around in a can or tank all winter. Thanks mike

Ticks over ok but when i squeeze the trigger it dies down and then stops

  • Alow the engine to run for longer on the start setting before you switch to run (choke turned off)
  • Ensure air filter is clean. Foam elements can be washed with hot water and detergent and then rub about half a teaspoon of oil evenly through the foam. Paper elements can be cleaned with compressed air blown from the inside of the filter but ideally should be replaced.
  • Check fuel lines aren't kinked or blocked restricting fuel flow.
  • Ensure fuel filter isn't dirty. This is probably located at the end of the fuel line in the tank.
  • The fuel lines may have become airlocked. This can happen if the tank is run dry. If the trimmer has a primer bulb, alternatively press it several times and then try to pull start the engine with choke on. Repeat this several times. The primer bulb should feel spongy and fill with fuel.Once the engine kicks, switch to run
  • Ensure the choke is turning off ok when you rev the machine (automatic turn off choke)

Engine run @ half choke but will not run in run position

It's starving for fuel. What is it? Sounds like the jets are plugged in the carb. or possibly water in the gas. Remove carb., disassemble, clean and put back together. You should get a rebuild kit for it first so you have new gaskets, etc. when you reassemble. It's a little more complex than I can put in words for you here.

Also empty and clean fuel tank too and start with fresh, clean fuel.

I have a 1981 GMCvandura 25 with a 350 4bbl carb. the choke.

Its all in the idle screws, if there bad you will be chasing them every time you drive it, also the choke spring inside could be bad, if you have a that style. screw the idle in on both sides all the way in, then back out 2 and a half turns, this should be where you will run the best. adjust as needed, but that is the standard. i also run sea foam through the carb, alot better then any cleaner on the market. usr it in your fuel or try to put it in the carb, i have uesd the vacume lines to do this, but you will also have to keep the car at high idle when doing this, it will clean all of the junk and carbon out of the entire motor.

if you need more help, please be clear or the carb, and hat you have done and not done already'
