I'm not dealing with Western Digital and I have no idea what the guy on the video is doing. It's totally black on the video. I need help with Firelight Smartdisk external harddrive. When I plug it into the USB port on my MacBookPro the green power light goes on on my Firelight external drive, but the MacBookPro no longer recognizes the Firelight external drive and I cannot download my saved files. Doesn't Smartdisk have a protocol or a site that handles these things? I don't want to start prying my external drive apart and putting it in a box from Amazon as suggested unless I know it is the recommended protocol.

For that first make sure your usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
Try it in different usb ports.
Make sure that jumper on the back side of harddrive fixed into right position
Ifyou have windows computer then check your harddrived into that computer if you can get error for accessing the harddrive then you need to repair your harddrive .
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Ok let me give you a breakdown on what happens to these drives.

!. Bad a/c power source
2. Bad usb to sata controller card inside the unit
3. Bad usb cable.

Ok try another usb cable and or power supply source, if that does not work your going to need to take the drive out of the external case and ether purchase a new case or put this unit into a computer to access the data (Mac's can be a issue here because of the complex detail on installing a drive inside them. You can buy a external case from for around $35 bucks.

But if your hard drive is not clicking or making horrible noises then the chances are the data on it is safe and you will have a safe extraction of the hard drive and it can go into another case. Now if you hear it clicking and all kinda of funny noises then the hard drive would not be use-able and therefore crashed (nothing you can do at this point)

Trust me I done this with a western digital my book and have had major success with extracting the drive I even got a tip on fixya how to do it.

your solutions have been delivered it takes you to act on them in order to gain sucess please let me know if you have any addition question otherwise press the accept button for my efforts.

I have a firelight smart disk 40GB Model FWFL-40-N. I have an I have a Mac Mini. Both are about 5 years old. When I plug the device in it doesn't show up on my desk top. Thanks for any help/advice

The Mac searches for peripheral devices on startup.
Try plugging in the drive and turning it on and THEN starting the Mac.
If the Mac does not acknowledge or see the device, then
check your cable that connects the device. Use a known good cable
to connect it. Then repeat the above procedure.

If any application such as Disk Warrior is still accessing the drive it will not unmount. The easiest solution is to reboot the computer and the offending application should no longer be accessing the drive and it would be available to eject.

the best thing I can tell you is to backup all of your data on this drive and then replace it. Once a hard drive starts to fail there is not a hole lot you can do. It is just a matter of time before it fails completly
