Ok let me be more specific. This is a laptop. The drives that I have tried have been formatted with both NTFS and FAT and niether show up in the bios. That has nothing to do with Windows.

I did think of that but when I put the original hard drive back in it won't boot into windows but it does show up in the BIOS. Wierd. I also put all 3 drives into a external USB shell and can extract information. I am going to look for a BIOS update and or do a battery reset on the BIOS. If you think of anything let me know and thatks for the help.

Hello

What are the sizes of the drives that you have tried? The IDE type of drive interface has a size limit, if you put a higher drive of that into a old machine like this it will not show up.

Assuming that you put in same type hard drives then it points to a controller failure. Your "failed" hard drive may actually be good or its failure caused the controller to also fail.

Ok, before a "Drive" will "Show Up" it First needs to be Jumperd as Master & Slave, (NB: Not ALL Drives work together) Also the Drive MUST be Partitioned and Formatted, NTFS, before "Windows" will "See" the HDD. The HDD, Master, usually will be drive C:, and the other HDD, will be E: Usually, A Drive:, usually the "Floppy" then the "HDD", will be C:, then, the "CD/DVD" will be D:, the next "HDD", will be E: If you have access to another PC, and you have a USB/HDD "Dongle". Then you could use this to Initialize, Partition and Format. For use with Windows, the best format is NTFS, using all default settings. Now after you have partitioned and formatted your HDD's, you must then go into the BIOS, and set your PC, to "Boot" from the DVD. Then you can Install Windows, by "Booting" of a Windows, Install DVD.

It can't locate a working boot disc. Most likely lost communications with hard drive. Look in BIOS again to see it recognizes the drive. If not try re-seating / reconnecting drive.

Error code0146-2000

Doing a little digging, it looks as though this is a hard drive failure code for some Dells including the Inspiron 6400. You will probably need to replace the hard drive. IF you need to get information off of the existing hard drive, I would try putting it an external enclosure. You may be able to retrieve some of the documents from there.

Go into the bios of your Dell and ensure that the Sata HDD 0 is being seen by the bios and that it has not been switched with the DVD. Make sure that the sata cables on the main board are plugged in correctly the hard drive should be in sata port 0 and on some dells it's sata port 1. Make sure in the bios that the Sata HDD 0 is enabled.

Hope this helps.

My Dell Inspiron 700 laptop with Windows XP suddenly will not boo

Remove the hard drive, then see if you can boot to the XP CD. If you can, then the Hard DIsk Drive has most likely failed. Reseat the HDD and try booting to CD again. If problem comes back, try a new hard drive.
