Question about Toshiba Satellite 1805-S204 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba Satellite 1900-S204 will not flash

I've tried a lot of software flashing utilities, but only error messages i get as an result, no progress.
The real problem is that the bios wont recognise the hard disk any more, it was not replased, and it works good as an USB connected on my other computer. Ive checked the hard disk , did FDISK /Cmbr 2 to check the master boot record and evenmade an HD image from a syster computer (same Brand ) and forced the image from that HD on this one. but stil the bios wont "See" it, i'm suspecting an virus, cause when i put the HD before i cleaned it in an other laptop the other on also stoped booting and giving me the same message "C drive not detected." or something like that.

Any suggestions?

Additional information requested follows.

Bios Downloaded ACPI version 2.10

Cmos Information (only relevant)

HardDisk Mode = not used

Boot Priority = HDD => FDD => CD-ROM => LAN
Power On Boot Select = Enabled

DRIVES I/O
HDD = No Drive

Floppy Disk = (3F2H/IRQ6/CH2)

Build-in LAN = Enabled

I am basically an Computer Programmer, but used to help neighbours colleges and or friends whith their computer related problems free of charge of course.

Normally it doesnt take more than a day or two to fix one. Used to go to the Registry and scan out the threats manually.
But now with this one i'am in big trouble an need help urgently.

What i;ve done already
downloaded and burn on a bootable CD windows and DOS routines like snapshot.exe (Works Like Ghost) to make compleet image of an HD.
And HD Tune 2.52 to scan HD disk surface for damaged blocks
connected the HD to an USB to IDE /SATA cable and backed up the data on my Computer then I've formatted the HD zero filled it and trieid again , no luck kept searching the internet for infos found out about Fdisk MBR command and bingo managed to clean the HD then but stil no luck for the computer to recognise the HD.
So i thought let me Flash the BIOS and get rid of every thing. Start with a clean HD and clean bios/cmos.downloaded routines like bios.exe , xbios.exe, uniflash.exe and the new bios from the toshiba site. and here i am now unable to flash the bios because when a program tries to overwrite the area the the threat is protecting an message apeares "the file XXXXX.bin can not be found on diskette" . of course this is an misleading message. what happens is the threat stop execution of the flashing program and then send that misleading message.

What i need from you.

Either a way to show me the running tasks in dos.
then a routine, program that enable me to stop the treath from executing first then i'll be able to flash, or a route that enables me to flash true the threat.

WHAT THE TREATH DOES.
It istablish himself on two places First Somewhere in the MBR area.
and in the bios but the boot area of the bios. it accept normal flashing of the cmos area but when you tries to replace the boot area command/instructions from the bios you'll get an error message "the file XXXXX.bin can not be found on diskette"

Hope to have imform you enough.

thank you for your time

Hi

Applogies for the delay reply. Thx for the rating and reply. I think for the meantime we will stict with the BIOS upgrade first. When done then we can sheck out the HDD.

Have you tried the BIOS by Floppy sticking with Toshiba's utility?

The current BIOS v.1.10 is Initial BIOS for Satellite 1800, download ACPI Flash BIOS version 2.10 for Satellite 1800/1805-Sxx4 - http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/1183v21.exe from a Windows PC. Run "1183v21.exe" to extract the files to a folder. Check the readme file for installation info

****Extract from ReadMe File******
A DOS batch file, INSTINFO.BAT is provided in the ZIP archive which will create the BIOS installation diskette.
If all else fails, you can execute the self-extracting diskette image manually. This file is named 1349D21.EXE , and needs a parameter of A: (1349D21 A:) to successfully create the diskette in drive A:

NB: I will be available for the next few day and will reply promptly

It might be PSU issue. I would recommend to consult a hardware technician... Also use a system utility tool like Reginout to fix windows registry errors. Sometimes PC failure errors occurs due to errors in windows files.

A stop error indicating UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME is nearly always symptomatic of a hard drive that has died. Take your PC to a local technician to be serviced.

Flashing Toshiba satellite 1800-S204

Hi

You query did not give any clues abt the PC/Motherboard and its BIOS revision.

That said if the PC/BIOS will not "see" the HDD then its is unlikely a cause of a virus.

Some old motherboards can't recognise a HDD if its size is more than 137GB. Some older motherboard also require than you set the HDD jumper correctly (Master or Slave).

At this stage, i am assuming the HDD in question is PATA or IDE (Old Spec). If the HDD is SATA (New Spec), then you will need a SATA port to connect the HDD. Ensure not to use both "old" molex power connector and "newer" SATA power connector together.

If the HDD is SATAII but the SATA spec for your motherboard is SATAI (initial spec), some motherboards and SATAII drives require that you jumper the HDD to allow it to work at the lower SATA speed.

If none of the above points apply try upgrading your system BIOS of the latest version. Also review the mortarboard's manual for more info.

Regards
Mike

Toshiba sat. 1805-S254

I am currently using the laptop model that you described. Go to toshiba support, click download, click portables, click satellite, and where it says: choose model, click show older models. Type in your satellite model on the search bar, (1805-S254) and click 1805-S254 in the results and hit GO. Now, the second thing from the top of the list of drivers says: BIOS. click the plus. Find: ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.10 for Satellite 1800/1805-S204/254/274 (v1.10; 10-23-2001; 671K)
and click it. Download the file and run it. Now follow the directions to make a BIOS floppy disk. After the disk is created, restart the computer. When the screen that says: Toshiba comes on, hit F12 to boot from a different device. Then it gives you a bunch of options. Hit the letter on the keyboard that tells the computer to boot from floppy disk. Then it should erase your current bios and rewrite the old one in. DO NOT update the BIOS! In the new BIOS, toshiba has a file that DOWNCLOCKS your processor. This is what makes your computer run so slow. Now people have complained that computer has overheated and shutdown but since i've downgraded the BIOS, it's been running just fine! Hope this helps! If it doesn't, email me at: fneoh7832@live.com.
