Question about Zebra 105Se Thermal Printer

1 Answer

My zebra 105se printhead light is blinking yellow what could this mean? I have tired replacing printhead and two board inside of printer (one smaller board that printhead wiring connect to and larger board that printer/pc cable connects to). Is there software that can diagnose this problem?

That fixed it. It almost seemed too easy. Believe it or not I had a repair tech take a look at this unit and a few others we have at our plant. After he said he could not get them to work he told me he would just take them for spare parts and not charge us for his hourly rate and the items he purchased to try to fix them (new roller bearings for the feed rollers and a new print head). I told him I would think about it and decided to take a look at them myself. I canabalized one unit for parts and now have the other two fixed and operational, thanks to bmillerident :) All that was wrong was an adjustment on the printhead when a washer that was lobe shaped like a cam shaft was out of allignement and causing the print head to not sit level and a set of roller bearing and the printhead light problem on the other caused by the open/shut flag. For some reason I get the sense the guy I had in here was trying to rip me off when he said these were no good but he would "take them off my hands" and not charge us since he could not get them to work.

    Thanks again bmillerident!!

The printhead light blinking usually means that the printhead is open. Is this happening with the printhead locked down ? If this is the case, the problem is with printhead open flag. It is located on the electronic side of the printer. You need to take off the side cover (with printer turned off). The lever that raises and closes the printhead is attached to a shaft (the pressure toggle is also on this shaft). Follow this shaft to the electronic side of the printer.

At the end of this shaft, there will be a black rectangular piece of plastic. This is the head open flag. When printhead is closed, the flag is positioned at the six o'clock position between two optic sensors. When the printhead is opened, the flag rotates clockwise to about the nine o'clock position. If the HEAD OPEN message appears when the head is closed, then the flag is out of position, usually it has become loose on the end of the shaft.

The flag is attached to the end of the shaft with an allen screw. Make sure the head is closed, position the flag to the six o'clock position between the two sensors and tighten the screw. this should take care of the problem.

Hope that helps !

Cool ! This is a common problem with the older Zebra's. The printhead handle would fall off and it would be reattached but the head-open flag would be in the wrong position resulting in the error. Or the allen screw would come loose and the flag would be out of position.

Glad I could help ! Thanks very much for the feedback.

We have a 105Se Zebra when it is printing in the middle of the bar code it does not print or is very light. We have cleaned the printhead and it still has the void on the barcode. We did notice a crack on...

Power off the printer and press and hold the pause key for 5 seconds while powering on the printer. This will start printing a bar across the width of the printhead. You should be able to determine whether it is a printhead issue or platen roller or both. Recycle power to exit diagnostics.

My Zebra 105SE is printing fine on the left

I think the 105 has an adjustment on the printhead. There are left and right hand adjusters just above the printhead. It sounds as if the right hand one does not have enough pressure on it, try increasing the RH one and see the effect on the print.

Label peeling

Sometimes the peel bar gets worn out and isn't very sharp anymore (replace). This will affect the peeling. Also try increasing the printhead pressure with the printhead toggle.

Sounds like a defective printhead.

Reinstall the old one to see if the problem remains or not.

Zebra 105Se missing line

Try cleaning the thermal printhead. Zebra makes thermal printhead cleaners or you can use a qtip and some isopropyl alcohol.

Make sure the printer is turned off before doing this.

Zebra 105se printhead issue

The controller thinks the printhead is still open. If it is open, close it.

If it's closed, it's likely that the sensor flag on the rear of the shaft has come loose and is no longer interrupting the photosensor. Remove the rear panel and inspect the flag while you move the printhead handle. The flag is supposed to be in the opening of the sensor when the printhead is closed and latched.
