If you have a modem or router or both, please connect the cables from the modem to router and router to the laptop. Now, try to go online by launching internet explorer.

I would like to assist you but I need more information before I present a useful solution. In your reply let me know the model of your laptop and whether it has XP or Vista.
Further what type of problem are you having, any error messages generated? Also I need the version of internet explorer. You can get the version from Help --> About.
Keeping in mind your description as for now the only solution is that you are using IE in offline mode. Change it to online as follows:
If the "Tools" menu is hidden, press ALT and you will see it.
If its not the solution then please reply back with further details so that I may look into the matter.
