Question about Kenmore Dryers

3 Answers

I have a Kenmore Elite Gas Dryer Model # 110.73954101. The machine will only run if I continuously hold the start button doen. The drum turns and the blower motor works but I get no heat. I tested that by holding the button down for a period of time. I also checked to see if the ignition on the gas assembly was turning on but it is not.

I checked the Thermal Fuse and it is okay.

I do not know where the Heating Element is.

Does a Gas Dryer have one?

Would it be called something else?

I tried this and I felt something click.

The motor runs now but only once.

If I let go of the start switch and then press start again, I get ahumming sound and it will not start.

I have to go feel around again and when I get the click, I can plug it back in and it will start. But the same as before.

It still will not stay on permenatnly.

Hi,

It would be a part called the motor control relay, it is located behind the top console panel. It is part number 3405281. Once you open the top console there will be two of these relays, one is for the heat and one for the motor the one you need to replace is the one that has 2 blue wires and 2 pink with black stripped wires.

It should cost about $30.00 or so for the part

You will need to unplug the dryer and turn off the gas **** to the dryer.
Remove the front panel to access the dryer motor.
Clean all lint from the motor shaft especially on the belt pulley end.
Manually activate the centrifugal switch on the motor shaft on the pulley end. It is most likely sticking from dust and lint and will not engage.
The start switch part # 3977456 is approximately $10.
It may also need replacing.

Hi

Thanksfor using FixYa. No Heatissue in dryer is usually caused due to three things mainly:Thermal Fuse, Wiring Harness and/or Heating Element. Start with checking theThermal Fuse which is mounted inside the back cover panel to the exhaust ductand is mounted in white plastic housing. If that’s fine then the HeatingElement should be checked. Please do accept the solution if theissue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

The drum in my kenmore elite he3 wont turn

That is a bad sign. If the buzzing starts when you press the start button and stops when you release its almost safe to say that the motor has a dead short or grounded out and causing that to happen. You can check the start switch by getting a multimeter and with the dryer unplugged take the wires off the switch, place a lead on each pin and press the start with meter set for continuity. If it shows continuity when presed and stops when released your motor is shot and needs to be replaced.
Now if you press the start button and the machine starts to hum and continues to hum its possible that something has gotten caught in the blower wheel and binding the motor up. Depending on the make and model the location and access to it vaaries.
If you can turn the drum and then the dryer starts you have a bad motor. The way the dryer works is when you initially push the start button, electricity is sent to the start winding, or stator, of the motor. This will in turn start the motor turning. From there the stator will drop out of the electrical process and at the same time the run winding, or rotor, will take over and the motor will continie to run. Your stator is damaged, has a burn spot, etc so by you turning the drum, the belt around the drum is moved which is attached to the motor pulley. You basically take the place of the stator. Long story short, you have a bad motor.

Kenmore Elite 73942 Gas Dryer only runs with start button held

Unplug the dryer. Open the control console.Mark and remove the wires from the start switch.
Using a volt meter set for continuity, touch meter leads to R1 and R2 while pushing the switch. No reading is a bad switch.
Touch meter leads to R2 and CT1. No reading is a bad switch.
If the switch checks out good the start windings in the motor are bad.

Runs when PTS held but shuts off when released/no heat

No problem at all.The motor has a start and run winding.Your run winding is bad.The reason you have no heat is the run winding has to run to close the contacts on the motor switch.Replace the motor ,both problems solved. Hope this helps Please rate my response :)

Dryer turns on, but does not run

Try to turn the drum inside with no clothes in it, does it turn freely both ways?

Then as someone is holding the start button, hold the door switch button, then try to turn the drum counter-clock wise, and see if it will start turning on its own.

If it does start turning, then the motor is more than likely the problem.

If it dosen't then the timer is more than likely the problem.
