If its old, its probably that the carbons of the rotator arent working well, so the best thing you could do is change the entire thing, replacing it is more dificult and expensive..
you could also try cleaning the lens.. but my best bet its that it isnt rotating fast enough to read the info on the disks

Dvd+rw nd-2100ad no disk in drive error

Can you see DVD-RW drives indicator busy when you insert that disk for a long time? if so, your drive may not going to read that disk. If it is in case of CD disk, sometimes DVD-RW just can't read it while very old CD-ROM can read! If this happens in case of other CD/DVD witch is readable by other DVD-RW, You may just try to clean the lens of your drive.

The disk driver for a emachines desktop will not recognize any disks

I have had this same problem on 3 drives over the years, it is a failed drive, this of course must be varified by checking that the drive does show up in the window explorer drop down. You can buy these drives very cheap on eBay, I think paid $15.00 for the IDE interface DVD-RW 22X DVD/CD reader/writer I just replaced in my Dell running a XP operating system.

My CD drive on my computer works sometimes and doesn't work other times. It will read data cd's more often than music cd's.

Some CD drives don't read all types of disks. For example it may not read DVD-R disks but will read DVD+R or Bluray disks. If you provide the model number of your drive I can give you a more detailed answer.

It wont recognize a recordable DVD. i tried both the R and the -R

Be sure that your hardware is a CD/DVD writer,
not just a "combo" drive (CD-reader/writer-and-DVD-reader).

Try a different brand/manufacturer of recordable media.

You may need to update the "firmware" (software residing inside the writer) to allow it to recognize "newer" blank disks.

Note that "blank" disks have some data recorded on them, to identify the manufacturer and composition and capabilities of the media (2X? 4X? 8X?). So, the values on "new" disks may not be allowable by "old' firmware inside the writer.

My Samsung CDRW/DVD SM352F plays commercial DVDs but will not recognise an inserted DVD/RW for recording picture files and shows properties as O bytes used space and O bytes free space. What is wrong?

the drive you are using is called a combo drive
CDRW- means CD WRITER
DVD- means DVD READER

DVD WRITER is not included in this combo...

only cd could be read and also written
but is case of DVD , it could only be read..

thankyou,.

Dvd/cd rom

hello melo21,this is nichu,
can you tell me the manufacturer name
of your DVD writer or reader. some times this problem persists if the discs u ae installing are not of good quality or else the lens of your DVD writer or reader might be a bit older resulting in poor reading capability of your DVD writer or reader .
alwas avoid inserting scratched discs which results a longlasting duration for your DVD writer or reader. take care
bye
