SOURCE: BLADE DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT

Well, most riding mowers have a "pully idler", meaning once you have the belt on there (and it is the RIGHT size), the idler automatically gives the belt tension when you engage it (in fact, the idler pully is what IS engaged when you engage the belly mower).

Couple things to check (super simple):

The Belt. Look to see if she is wore smooth out.
Sometimes....they WILL stretch on you, instead of busting/coming apart, and give you noise (when she is engaged, but wore out enough to flop around a little)

The Deck Blade Bearings. Straight away, that is what it sounds like, or bent blades.

Check your Blade Bearings (super simple):
1. Pick up your deck to the highest high setting (mower off, just sitting).
2. Reach under, and grab your mower blade (do this for both sides), and TILT your blade UP (meaning, don't LIFT the blade straight up).
Seriously, jiggle it at a TILT. If you feel some slack in the bearing, the bearing IS shot. Straight up and down is most of the time OK, IF it is VERY little play on your blade bearings. As you do it, look at your belt pulley directly on top, if you see that pully bobbing....

However, if you grab one side of the blade only, then tilt the blade up, and she moves.....
Bearings need replaced, both the upper AND lower bearings PER blade.

They are not hard to replace, and not expensive either! (Though unfortunately, most are "sealed" junk nowadays!)

Bad Bearings show up (make themselves known) in only a few ways: Tons of Noise (grinding, squealing) & Vibration.

Go check them thar Bearings!

SOURCE: Hi, Just replaced the drive belt on a Husqvarna

Hello,
My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem.
I looked up your mower and I believe you should be using drive belt# 5321701-40. That is a 112" belt. Here is a link to the parts manual and a drawing of the belt routing. As long as that is the belt you have, and replaced it correctly it should be fine. You are correct, when you put the mower in gear, the pulley system will put more tension on it.

Well, I hope I've helped. If you found this information useful, please leave me some THUMBS UP if you think I'm deserving! :-) Thank you! Dane

WILL NOT DRIVE FORWARD OR REVERSE

It sounds like the drive belt has slipped off a pulley. With fuel turned off, tilt the mower to one side- so the fuel cap is at the highest point of the tank, and cannot leak fuel out the breather hole. One belt will drive from the engine and the other end goes around an idler pulley. The other belt will drive from the axle to an idler pulley and will be slightly loose. This is the one that may have slipped from its position and not be contacting one or more pulleys when tightened. There should be a pair of pulleys, each being one side of the drive belt. Pressing the forward control should move one pulley onto the drive belt and simultaneously tighten the axle belt. Pressing the reverse control should engage the other pulley(on the opposite side of the belt) and also tighten the axle belt. This loose belt may have been bumped off one or more pulleys in the collision, and be sitting between the pulley and the guide/guard. With the ENGINE OFF, and the forward/reverse selector in neutral you should be able to force the loose belt back over the pulley.
Whether the forward/reverse mechanism drives the engine or axle pulley, the principle will be the same.

How to adjust tighten drive belt on Poulan riding mower with 18 hp b&s motor 42 deck

Probably needs a new belt. You can buy a belt dressing and spray the belt once in a while. Its a special sticky spray for belts that slip.
That will keep you going for a little while.

Why won't my Lawnboy model #10604 self-propell go forward?

Its possible that the drive belt is old and stretched. You may need to replace the belt.

How do I change the drive belt on a 7021r mower? The drive will move the mower on pavement but not on the grass

First, you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job. You'll need a wrench, work gloves, mower blade clamp, drain pan and fresh fuel. Check your owner's manual for the correct belt to your specific lawn mower. Belts that are not specifically designed for your mower will not fit properly and may wear down prematurely. Next, remove the spark plug wire. This is a safety precaution to prevent the mower from accidentally starting.
Now you can remove the screws that secure the drive cover to the mower deck. Once you've taken off the drive cover, loosen the screw that holds the belt tension spring to the transmission. As the screw is loosened, tension on the belt is released allowing you to remove the belt off of the front transmission pulley.
At this point you'll need to turn your mower on its side to take off the mower blade. Be sure to use a work glove to protect your hand when removing the mower blade. You can use a lawn mower blade clamp over the blade to secure it. Unscrew the bolt to remove the blade and then the engine baffle. Once the pulley unit is exposed, you can remove the entire drive belt. Insert the new drive belt and place one end on the rear pulley and re-attach the engine baffle. Then, place the mower blade back (making sure it's facing the correct way with bottom of the blade facing the ground) and tighten the bolt. Remove the clamp and return the mower to its upright position so you can place the other end of the belt to the front pulley. Remember to tighten the screw to the tension spring.
Put the front drive cover back on, tighten the screw that secures the cover to the deck and reconnect the spark plug wire. Add new fuel to your mower and you're done!

Cable to engage the self propelled pully came loose. How do i reattach it?

Hi,
Instructions
Step 1 Locate the spark plug wire, and disconnect it from the spark plug.
Step 2 Remove the screw that is used to secure the belt cover to the mower with a screwdriver. Take the belt cover off of the mower.
Step 3 Loosen the belt tension bolt with the socket wrench. The belt tension bolt is located next to the wheel adjustment lever on the left front of the mower.
Step 4 Pull the front part of the drive belt off of the transmission pulley that is located on top of the motor.
Step 5 Tilt the mower on its side, and pull the rear part of the drive belt over the mower blade.
Step 6 Insert the rear of the new drive belt over the mower blade, and place the front of the belt over the transmission pulley.
Step 7 Tighten the belt tension bolt with the socket wrench.
Step 8 Locate the adjuster nut located on the underside of the mower near the belt tension bolt.
Step 9 Tighten the nut with the wrench until it touches the spacer, and slightly loosen the nut so that the spacer can turn.
Step 10 Set the belt cover back onto the mower, and secure it with the screw.
Step 11 Re-connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
Good Luck!
