Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Hi, I have a whole-house heavy duty water filtration unit from GE. When I go to replace the filter, it and the entire inside of the filter system is coated with a purplish slimy substance that stinks. I try to clean the unit the best I can, but it just reappears and makes the water smell bad. What is it, and how can I fully clean the filter system so it does not return?! Thanks, Jerry pested@aol.com

This could be some form of a silt type substance. I would recommend a sediment pre-filter in front of the GE System. Possibly a Rusco Spin Down Filter System. This is a clear housing and a mesh filter that is washable. You would want to use a 250mesh filter.

Recomended Product Example:

Do you use liquid soap or fabric softner,if so change to small amount of powder.try filling the machine with really hot water and let it soak for an hour or so.hope this helps.

Does the top loader heavy duty machine have a filter and does it need to be cleaned regularly. If so, where is it located?

No filter to be cleaned in the machine. There are however small wire mesh filters in the screw on connectors that connects the water hoses to the machine at either the tap side or where it are connected to the machine inlets. Unscrew the hoses from the tap and machine inlets and check both hose ends if the wire filters are not to clog up over time resulting in slow water filling of the machine. Remove carefully and clean with a nylon brush. Replace again.

Whirlpool heavy duty super capacity plus machine. Does this model have an water input filter. Water flow is very low while filling.

First you should remove the hoses and clean the screens in the ends of the hose, some hoses have screens in both ends. While the hoses are removed look inside the water inlet valve there should be a screen in there also remove and clean the screen out. Some screens will not be removable so you will need to clean in place or remove the water inlet valve. If all is clear you will need to check the solenoids on the water inlet valve for power. If the solenoid has power when put in a fill cycle and no water eneters your washer you will need to replace the water inlet valve. Most water inlet valves must be replaced as a unit, so if one solenoid fails you replace the hole valve assembly. These are inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that will walk you thru the testing procedure. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. If you need help disassembling there are also videos of disassembling most styles. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models will be available. All parts come with installation instructions.

Amana Touchmatic Heavy Duty Washer Filter Light Flashing

I have the same washer unit and I purchased my washer new in 1989. The flashing filter light is normal. If the light doesn't flash, than the water filter is plugged up. The water filter is self cleaning each time the water empties. You can take off the front panel(two screws at the bottom and the top disengages with metal clips. The water filter in at the bottom on the right, white plastic housing. There is a drive belt from the motor that powers the pump. When the washer goes into the spin cycle, the motor changes rotation direction and the pump works in reverse, thus flushing out the lint that may have been captured during the agitation cycle. I hope this helps.

No spin cycle

Something simple. Plug off the wall mains. Find your pump, dismantle to locate block. Before that you could check out your filter to clean out.

Kenmore Heavy Duty Washer Leaking from bottom

Probably the drain pump seal has gone bad.
Check it for leaks.
If your floor is good and level look for water near the front center of the machine.

GWL15 no hot water on Regular or Heavy Duty Cycles

should you select a 40* wash it would not be right if the machine filled with hot water, as the water in the house tank is a lot more than 40* ( around 65* i think?) this would just damage the clothes and i am sure you would just complain again at that.

if the machine works fine then there is no problem
