Question about RTO Atwood Water Heater - 6 Gal LP

1 Answer

We believe we are to turn on the water electric button to start the heater. Directions say the light should go out when ignition occurs. It won't go out.

If your water heater has an electric element, as well as electronic ignition for gas operation, you may be getting them mixed up. One switch should show like a lightning bolt beside it,(that's for hydro use) the other will show a small gas flame beside it.(that's to turn on ignition for gas operation.)
If you only have one, my guess is it's for electronic ignition. When you turn that on, you should hear the water heater trying to ignite outside.("click, click, click) and then burner should ignite if you have your propane on. Get back to me with your model number of the heater, behind cover outside, and I can tell by that what you have as far as just gas, gas and electric, etc.

There have been some with light that stays on after ignition, but most were the style you described where it stays on until ignition and burner ignites. If your water heater lights by itself and is heating water properly and re-lighting when necessary, on it's own, I wouldn't be too alarmed as long as is works. Have the switch checked if your worried about it, but personally, as long as it works right, I wouldn't spend any money having it diagnose and replaced, unless you plan on buying it and installing it yourself.

The pilot light does not remain on when the button is released. While holding the button in and turning on the water no ignition happens. Gas cylinder is full. Please assist. Thanks! Mark

Your gas valve works in conjunction with a therm o electric valve it is a 2 stage operation. 1 is when you push it in and light the pilot. 2 is when you release the button. This prevents full gas to the burner and prevents ignition taking place if the pilot light fails. The thermo-couple provides a small electric current around 30ma which holds the therm o electric valve open and in turn keeps the pilot light on. The thermo-couple needs to be replaced, if it still cuts out then ths therm o electric valve which is a n integral part of the gas valve has failed and a replacement gas valve would be needed.

When trying to ignite electric pilot light, when pushing button to ignite, pilot doesnt spark to create flame

Pull out sparking rod and lightly polish with fine steel wool. then put back together. Could be in control box but I doubt it. You will probably see mild corrosion on rod.

Check that gas is turned ON. Gas handle is parallel same direction as gas line.

Make sure that type of gas matches water heater. Natural gas and propane gas are two different types of gas. check label on side of tank for type of gas NG or LP.

Could be bad regulator valve. Make sure you follow the lighting directions to the TEE. But if it will not light at all in pilot mode, its most likelt a the regulator valve.

GE (Rheem) SmartShield Water Heater. it rained on the hot water heater and now the pilot won't light. Any ideas?

Does it have an electric ignition? If so, remove the pilot light access panel, blow inside the chamber with a hair dryer. Do this until there is no more moisture inside. Then follow the lighting instructions. Try this even if it's a match start. Thanks and please rate.

I would suggest that you remove pilot assembly from gas valve and burner and clean pilot orifice and see if that helps. Be careful when cleaning hole in the orifice so you don't enlarge the hole. Good luck and thank you.

When gas switch on an atwood water heater is turned on, the electric switch blinked and unit doesn't light

It usually only lights when starting up on propane, or if it didn't ignite for one reason or another. Usually light off indicates working o.k. Are you sure the electric element hasn't been on and water is heated already? Carefully open pressure relief valve slightly and see if water is hot or cold.
