1) Computer off, and unplugged from power.

2) Work on a table, open the computer case.
TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case to relieve your body of Static.

[Your body carries Static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.
Computer unplugged from power, you are safe. TOUCH the metal frame, your computer is safe.

Should you walk away in the middle of working on your computer, when you return Touch the metal frame again ]

To open the computer case three screws have to be removed from the backside of the computer case.

The computer case is a shell, that resembles an upside down U-shaped hood.
Looking at the back of the computer you can see where the U-shaped hood wraps around, and forms a 1 inch lip.

There is a screw approximately two inches up on the Right, and Left side, and a screw at the Top, in this lip. Remove them.
Slide the U-shaped hood back about 1 inch, lift the hood up, and off.

{Note* The metal frame of the computer case has a Notch at the front/top on both sides.

The U-shaped hood has a metal Tab that protrudes inward on both sides.
The metal tab lines up with the notch, so that the tab can slide up through the notch.

This is why the U-shaped metal hood is pulled back towards the rear of the computer ONLY 1 inch, THEN lifted straight up.

You are now looking at the metal frame of the open computer case, and the internals of the computer.

This document from HP Support shows, and details the above,

The harddrive is located at the inside front of the computer.
The harddrive is an IDE harddrive made by Seagate.

Note* IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA.

Remove the 4-pin Peripheral power cable connector from the rear of the harddrive.
This one,

Remove the 40-pin flat ribbon cable connector from the harddrive. (Interface cable, or also known as a Data cable)

You'll note there is a metal bracket that surrounds the harddrive.
There is a screw at the top of the bracket, and one at the bottom of the bracket.
These two screws hold the bracket in place, close to the front of the computers metal case framework.
Remove them.

Remove the harddrive.

(The Seagate model number ST320423A is a 20GB IDE harddrive.
The ST315323A is 15GB IDE harddrive.
The ST310212A is a 10.2GB IDE harddrive )
