A power washer works well, just be careful not to bend over the fins.
Good luck,

How do you clean the coils?

Good Morning Friend,

I understand you want o know how to remove the coils to clean them on your Frigidaire air conditioner, model# FAS257S2A. You will not be removing the coils. If you will please start by cleaning the filter like so:

• Tilt the panel out by grasping the panel from both sides, just below the controls and the air directional louvers, and gently pull to release. Pivot the panel on its hinge's and remove the filter.
• Wash the filter using liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Rinse filter thoroughly. Gently shake excess water from the filter. Be sure filter is thoroughly dry before replacing.
• Or, instead of washing you may vacuum the filter clean.

While you are cleaning the filter, the coils will be located behind the filter area, you can clean them with a vacuum extension. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

The front of the unit behind the filter freezes up. Worked flawlessly for weeks but freezes up. Cleaned the filter several times but continues to do so.

the reason for the coil (behind the filter) to freeze up is 'low air flow' over the coil, which is usually caused by a dirty filter AND/OR the coil itself.
Be sure the coil is clean and not clogged up. Shine a flashlight into the fins and be sure it's clean.
If it is clean then you need to look at the fan motor. Is it blowing correctly? Is it cutting off at times?
Low air flow across the coil is the main problem with coils freezing up, although less likely is a 'low refrigerant charge.'
I would make sure the coil was clean and the motor was blowing air across it in the proper manner.

Our air conditioner isn't cooling as much as it was, what could be the problem?

Hello, there are a few thing that can cause a Air conditioner to not cool well enough. First off the airflow should be checked, filters, evap coil to see if they are clean. Secondly the unit may have a leak which is causing your unit to loose refrigerant and therefore not cool well. Have these two areas checked out on your air conditioner.

What maintance do goldstar conditions need? My cooler is not working as well and I cleaned the front filter. I'm not sure what window conditioner I have.

these units need to be cleaned every few years. so take it outside, get your garden hose; and clean the coils on both sides. front an back coils need to be clean. a coil cleaner should be used but good water presure should do fine. try not to get switches to wet. or cover them first. spray coils clean. let dry in the sun. tilt unit to get most water out then blow dry with a fan or just wait till its dry it will work like new after your done.good luck

Ilet the filter on my unit get clogged and it quit cooling. after i cleaned the filter it still doesn't cool.

"If your dirty filter caused your problem,' it was because it restricted the air flow across the cooling coil. Often if the filter is clogged then the air will divert around the filter itself - and clog the cooling coil too, in which case you will need to clean the cooling coil.

The cooling coil is looped in a coil (hence the name) and is comparable to a car radiator. You will need to clean the fins (that are entwined around the coil) so that air - can flow unrestricted, over the coil.

This can usually be accomplished with a brush of some sort. Often you can use your fingers to peel the moist mat of hair and dirt off the front of the coil.

The problem (usually) is getting to the coil, because once you get to it - it generally is not that hard to clean. Your goal is make sure air flows thru the fins and over the coil - unrestricted of dirt, hair, or whatever.

Remember - many things can cause an AC unit to 'not cool' besides the filter being dirty - which is why I prefaced my answer with 'if your dirty filter caused your problem'

Good Luck!

The fan is making alot of noise

Try cleaning the coils and make sure the fan blades are clean. Any dust or soot will cause the fan to work extra hard. The fan needs to be cleaned and have good air flow. If all of this has been done and you still experience the noise, then you could have fan bearings or brushes that are wearing out.

My SM18J30A air conditioner runs for a couple of hours then automatically shuts off and I get an E2 message in the air conditioner window. What does this mean

clean both coils(fins)and drain///use a non-detergent non additive oil(not motor car oil) for fan motor take cover off compressor relay and inspect wires(clean plugs and pins of oxide) you may need a hard start kit if it has a hard time starting you can get a hard start relay kit

When I start my ac it works unless it's working really hard for a long period. In this case it runs but stops cooling. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I would make sure that the outside coil (condenser) is clean. It sounds as if it overloads on hot days. Make sure the inside filter is clean. too.
