Question about GE JES1142SF Microwave Oven

1 Answer

I think I broke my baby...

This morning I accidentally started the microwave when I meant to use the timer function for about 10 mins. When I realized my error after about 9 mins, I hit the stop button. The unit was Super hot inside and out. Now the microwave won't work at all, like there's not any power to it. Could this be the magnatron overheating (is it fried?!), or did I simply blow the fuse?-Charlie Willson, Denton, TX

I did the same thing, but not as severe. The microwave still turns on, but it doesn't heat anything. Any ideas what could be wrong, and if it is replaceable?

If it's dead, it's probably a blown fuse or maybe a blown thermalcouple fuse. a bad magnatron won't make the unit apear dead unless its blowing fuses.

Hope that helps..

I just bought a new rice cooker container for my family to cook rice. It saids use one cup of rice with 1 and a half of water and microwave for ten minutes. Then thought I use 3 cup of rice then must...

you do not need to triple the time when tripling the quantities, example: one baked potato = 8 min, 2 = 10 min,3= 12 min ....

sounds like a triple batch is a bit much for your microwave
so you may want to cut it in half

Chances are the thermal fuse is gone that protects the magnetron. Unplug microwave, remove top, [several screws] look over to the keypad and slightly to the left, you should see round fuse mounted on the inner chassis at the top, change with the same size and rating, if all goes well the microwave oven should function.

Microwave runs but does not heat or cook food

If a Goldstar, LG or Zenith MV1610 or MV1608 is running but not seeming to heat a load placed in center of turntable, its probably because the "stirrer" intended to spread microwaves generated by the magnetron around the cook chamber is stuck so that most all the heating is directed toward the back and top rather than the center of the cook chamber. This usually occurs after cooking for longer than a minute with no load in the cook chamber - as when a model w/o a timer (such as a MV1608) is intentionally operated in cook mode to serve as a kitchen timer, or when a model with a timer function (such a MV1610) is accidentally operated for longer than a minute w/o any load. Before assuming the magnetron (usually warranted for 5, 8 or even 10 years) or other high voltage component such as diode or capacitor needs to be replaced, try “cooking” a 16 oz pyrex cup of water at full power on the outer edge of the turntable for 2-3 minutes - which usually reactivates the "stirrer" and restores normal cooking function.

Unit is dead after accidentally running it empty.

If you ran it for that long with nothing inside, there is a good chance it self cooked.

It can probably be repaired. The economics of the repair is something you will have to judge for yourself.

To assist you, may i suggest you visit www.repairclinic.com and check on some major parts for your make and model. If the parts = more than 25% of replacement, I think id be moving on. Expect to pay a pro at least $100.00/hr labor. You should NOT do it unless you are skilled at handling delicate and lethal electronics. A microwave can kill. Another thing, after you fix it, you have a lot of $ invested and still have a old machine that ran for 13 + minutes empty.

Turned microwave on this morning ,sudden crackle, then nothing.

Sounds like something has shorted out-blown. Unless it is a very expensive model it won't be worth fixing and is not something you should attempt yourself anyway. If under guarantee then get it repaired via the guarantee arrangements. No harm in checking the plug is wired properly but as the light and timer are working it is very doubtful it is a connection problem. I think you need to buy a new microwave!

Microwave no heating

It sounds like the magnetron failed.
Check this link for more info and maybe a way for you to test it for functionality. If you are uncertain on what and how to do it, I would suggest to take to a repair tech.
