Does my notebook need a new heatsink/fan?

I have a Gateway MX6453 Notebook I got three and a half years ago. I broke it being stupid slamming the computer with my first where the hard drive goes.
The computer starts up, but loads extremely slow and the fan no longer works.

First off, the hard drive is broken, I know this because I have a family member who has the same exact computer and I put their hard drive in mine and it boots up perfectly fine. The problem is though that the fan still doesn't work.
The fan and heat sink for my laptop are available on this website:

The whole thing cost $50 bucks, and that discludes how much a new hard drive will cost me! Before I drop the bucks on this fan/heatsink, does anyone here think it's the fan at all or something more serious, like a problem with the power supply? I already broke a cable on it taking it out (rediculously tiny cable that's impossible to get out) so it will need replaced anyway, but is it even worth replacing or should I just buy a new laptop?
When the computer starts up, the fan runs extremely fast then shuts off 5 seconds later. When I tried the other hard drive in it, it didn't start up at all. Does that sound like an issue with just fan or something more serious? I am very good with computers but I need someone with more knowledge about notebook repair that thinks if I should buy this part or just go for a new PC. The place that sells this doesn't allow returns for cash back and they are the only one that sells it and has it in stock.

Someone please help, I love this notebook and got it as a christmas present but I need a computer, if it can't be fixed without spending lots of money I would rather buy a new notebook.

If your fan spins at all it is not a problem with the fan. It might be a heat sensor on your motherboard that was not reading correctly.

Now your fan will only run when it needs to so the best thing to do is replace your hard drive and go from there. You can get a hard drive from Best Buy and if that doesn't fix it then your can just return it and buy a new laptop. Or if you want to keep the hard drive just buy a USB enclosure and use it as a backup drive for your pictures, music, etc. Don't go buying a fan if the fan still spins. But a part that can be easily returned first.
