Question about Brother HL 5140 Laser Printer

1 Answer

Power surge Printer is about 2 years old. When I send pages to be printed, printer power surges, and shuts off my computer. Computer plugged into APC 500 UPS, printer plugged into separate 3100 Joule surge protector, but both are on same circuit. This is a new problem.

This is kind of hard to diagnose, but i can try to help you out. I had a problem like this in my own house. A laser printer when it first starts to print it pulls an incredable amout of electricity. Therefor it can make a few things happen. It can make your battery kick in which can be telling the pc to turn off. Or it can be blowing the fuse in your actual circuit panel. To test if you need more power i would run a heavy duty extension cord to the printer and plug it in to a seperate outlet than you can be certain is not on your comptuers circuit. If it works without turning your computer off you know your problem is your electric circuit in your house. I would then call an electrican. If it still does not work after trying the above which i dont see a happening then i would be kind of stumped :)...
Try this above step and let me know. thanks again
Steven.
P.S. my computer worked fine for along time too before i saw any power issues.

Grinding noise

I just chatted with Dell support about this since I have the same problem of the grinding noise on my C1760NW Dell printer. I have it plugged into an APC backup battery which acts like surge protector (unless power goes out then battery kicks in). He said the printer needs more power and that surge protectors and battery backups are not good for this printer since they restrict the power which sends less power to the motor and fuser than what it was designed for. So with less power from the APC backup/surge protector, the motor moves very slow and may not fuser the toner to the page correctly and can cause permanent damage over time. So I plugged into the wall directly instead and the grinding noise went away immediately even when printing 10-15 pages right after plugging into wall, but then the noise came back when I printed a bigger job. So for now I'm letting it cool down for a couple hours and crossing my fingers that the damage is not permanent. So... answer is plug it into the wall directly for maximum power and hope that your printer is not permanently damaged. By the well, Dell support chat was awesome.

APC PRO1300 F04 CLAMP SHORT ERROR CODE WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND HOW CAN I FIX?

F04 indicates that "Clamp Short" it could be anything, but the word "clamp" reminds me of a varistor / MOV, which is the component that clamps short when there is a voltage surge condition and comes back to its normal state, an open circuit, when the voltage surge is gone. Sometimes it clamps short for good when it is hit by a large surge or just by absorbing and shunting to ground many small surges.

You can brain dead the UPS to check if that resolves the issue. This brain dead test helps to reset the internal circuit of UPS.

1. Disconnect any attached load.
2. Turn off the UPS
3. Unplug the UPS from the wall socket.
4. Disconnect the UPS internal battery.
5. Push and hold the "On" button on the UPS for 5 seconds.
6. Reconnect internal battery.
7. Plug UPS in to known good power source.
8. Turn the UPS ON.

If the same issue remains even after brain dead then you have to replace the UPS. This UPS comes with 3 years of warranty, if it is under warranty you can contact APC support at 800 555 2725

If the UPS is out of warranty then you can participate in APC Trade-UPS program. APC has Trade-UPS program where in you can trade your old unit and get a new unit with great discount. You will also get a return shipping label to ship the trade-in unit to us. You can refer to the below mentioned URL.

My computer reboot everytime I print on Brother MFC8440

Hello uday,

All brother laser machines have a huge spike in power usage when they power up, about 15 amps for a second or two; this is normal.

It is strongly recommended not to use a UPS for Laser printers.

The reason the computer shuts down is because the UPS only allows for a certain amount of electricity to go through and since the printer needs so much, the UPS cuts power to the computer.

Computer goes off peroidically. Computer is plug into the APC Back-UPS Pro

Ensure proper input voltage coming in the location.

Ensure the working condition of the UPS Button switch.

If this APC UPS is 2 to 3 years old, better replace the Battery 7 Volts - 1 Number and check the problem.

If the problem persists, Please contact local authorized UPS Dealer Engineer to settle this issue.

Beeping noise

I've had the Dell 1720dn at my desk for years. Worked flawlessly. Moved it to a different workstation and it began beeping immediately while printing. Another site said to plug it directly into the wall, instead of a battery backup. I unplugged it from the battery backup outlet, and plugged into a surge protector only outlet on the same battery backup unit.... NO MORE BEEPING. Hope this helps someone else.

Printer Surge

I agree with first thought circuit overload.

I dont think it is the printer, I think it is your power supply in house. Just moving it to another socket does not change it from what might already be a circuit with a lot of load already.

You are experenceing surges that are normal operation ie at power on quatz lamp turns on reaching temp of 180 deg cel, then idles, if print command is issued back on comes the lamp drawing power.
