Toshiba 57H83 will not turn on

I have a big screen Toshiba 57H83 that will not turn on. We have tried different outlets, so we know its not that.  When you try to turn it on - it has a clicking sound like it is trying to come on but doesn'tt will continue to do that until you unplug it.  Also the Red light in front does go off and on while it is clicking.  Please help, it seems like maybe a simple switch that we can fix ourselves.

Thanks,  JE This 4 year old set looks dead.
It will not turn on and the red ON botton is dark.
There are no other symptoms.
It is plugged into the same power strip as the cable box which is ON.

This repair might no be a DIY, because there might be different failures on the TV. It could be the flyback transformer or the high voltage block or even a defective power supply, so I would not advise you to get to that high voltage area without knowing where and what to check.

There is some shorting in the main board

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2008

the clicking sound is from the relay which trips the circuit when it founds any short or any problem in circuit.

    this is the reason.

open the main board and look for any visual faults else only a tech armed with a multimeter can find this and isolate the problem

    thank you

Toshiba 57H83 and no longer get any sound. Any

Most often No Sound with Toshiba 57H83 is:

1. TV has a Sound on-off switch on the input panel at the rear of the TV. Very hard to see, black on black. Used to turn off speakers if you use a separate or external sound system for speakers. Usually gets moved while connecting hd cables or dusting and vacuuming in cramped space at the rear of the TV.

2. Someone accidentally changed Sound settings with remote to CC (closed caption) or SAP. Turn off in sound menu and save preference.

3. Sound input plugs from external cable or sat box unhooked or wrong input.

Toshiba 57H83 no sound fault is not common. If you still have no sound, get local service.

Or troubleshoot yourself to determine if Tuner, IF, processing, sound demod, switching or sound output circuit is smoked. Then make an installation plan.

Screen turn green tv is 57 rear projection

Good Day,
It appears that you may have a green drive issue. Try adjusting the Sreen Control it is located in the front of TV.
1) Remove Speaker Grill (it just pulls off) start at one end, 2) Remove cover (5-6 screws), 3) Adjust control. The control is located on lower right side towards bottom. A small black device with 2 rolls of controls, adjust the center control on bottom row counter clock wise, until you get a black and white picture.(adjust with color control to min).
If this does not work you light bulb (CRT) is bad about a $750.00 repair.

Good Luck, Big Irish.

Sorry to tell you that one of your tubes went. There is a projector bulb and that is probably what went. Is is still under warranty? Check out this link below for a PDF detailed manual for your item Check out pages 59 and 60 for warranty information. The second link is for Toshiba support page. Just copy and paste link into your browser.

My toshiba 57h83 has a black rectangle in the middle of the picture what do i do

Check your closed-caption settings and make sure they are turned off (or set to "caption 1" or "CC1" if you really want them). You will find the captions set for "text" now and that's why you see that black box sometimes. The set is blanking out a part of the screen for the text that never shows up. Most TVs have a single button to set captioning, so it's easy to press it and change modes without knowing it.

Please take a moment to rate this solution if it's cleared up your screen, and thanks for asking here!
