My Jura S9's grinding unit clogged (due to Peete's beans)

My Jura S9's grinding unit clogged (due to Pete's coffee beans that were apparently too gooey. Seems like this shouldn't be so easy to do, BTW)
I've cleaned the grinder out with a brush, vaccuum and lastly with compressed air. The unit grinds about 1/3 of what it should now, and produces wet grinds in the tray.

The manual feed of ground coffee works fine, so all else seems OK.

Thanks in advance!

Cleaning the unit didn't help. Nor did turning it with the key included in the welcome kit.

Now it's back to not taking in any beans when grinding. Elsewhere on this site there is a post about removing the top part of the unit to clean the grinder knives - will this help and can it be put back and aligned easily ?

Cleaning the unit didn't accomplish anything. Now in fact it isn't drawing any beans into the unit - back to square 1.

  • c_cestaro Apr 28, 2010

Thanks. The beans were too wet causing the clogging. The seals are all in place as originally installed...the grinder apparently still isn't taking beans down into it, or is clogged as very little coffee gets into the press area.

Thanks, but I've only cleaned it from above. Will need to disassemble the grinder itself as suggested by someone here who appears to really know this type of appliance.

If you can manual feed them OK, then it seems you should be able to use the grinder. I have never heard of coffee beans being too gooey? But if the grinder had a gasket on it, make sure that was reinstalled properly. If it had one that was misplaced when the grinder was removed this could even be why Pete's beans failed to begin with.

I would also try and clean the grinder again and make sure that it is completely dry before reinstalling it, check the seals around the grinder and the feeder and make sure that you have not bent or twisted anything.

Usually water in the grounds container is caused by the coffee solenoid valve return side being blocked from dry coffee. Using cleaning tubelets to clean the coffee grounds out. If that doesn't work then you should remove the solenoid and clean it out with warm water. If that still doesn't rid you of the wet grinds you should have a certified repair tech take a look at it. You may end up having to replace the solenoid but that should be verified by a tech before you spend the money.

Mine just started doing the same thing. I've always only used plain espresso beans. Only thing is I may have overfilled the hopper and packed the beans down a bit. How can I make it start grinding again?

It seems withthis model you have a 1 year or 4000 cups warranty with this.
If you are within this, then give them a call - here is the Manual if you don't have it -
MANUAL -

I suggest you start by removing the beans in the hopper and wiping around to remove oils.
Then refill with fresh dry beans.
Plug in and set up as normal
Set to brew a standard large cup - and adjust grinder to coarse setting while grinding.
Do not adjust with grinder quiet - it must be done while rotating.

Make at least 10 cups this way at the coarse setting.

I think what has happened is that damp beans (frozen or cold) have entered the unit and caused the coffee to gum up at the top of the burr.
This will just push fresh beans out of the way instead of starting to grind them.

If you use dry (light loast) beans, it doesn't seem to happen as much.

Just ake sure you refrigerate most of your stocks, but keep a small stock at room temperature in an airtight tin to prevent this kind of thing.

You can actually push down on the bean stack slightly with a wooden object while the grinder is running if nothing moves on the coarse setting to get things moving.

Same thing happening to me right now. I think this has something to do with having used flavored beans (which I was warned not to do). Supposedly they gum up the machine.

The machine says FILL BEANS but beans are in it...yes, we did run out of beans but now it won't recognize beans. we cleaned it out, grinded , etc...but it still says fill beans. We also rinsed many times,...

Hi
Oily beans (shiny) can some times stick together after grinding with a fine setting. Try opening the grinder setting to the very coarsest setting and see if it will clear the passage. If you have pushed the brew button an lot of times you may have packed the grounds in the passage which will have to cleaned manually.
Once you have the grinder working again, open it to the coarsest setting to clean the burrs. 1 time is enough. To turn the grind setting back down to your setting make sure that the grinder is running at that time. You can open to a coarse setting any time but it has to be running to finer.

I have a s9 avantgarde keep getting error fill bean even though i have plenty of bean in the hopper

Seems Problem with the bean sensor. you need to get the same replaced. there are no setting that can be done manually for bean sensor.

A Jura Engineer can check the Bean sensor with his computer system and confirm if the bean sensor is faulty.

Jura E9 grinder spins but does not grind

I had a similar problem, and solved it by turning the grinder by hand against resistance. Apparently the grinder wasn't really turning during the cycle and needed to be cleared. If your beans are "hopping" this may be a different problem.

Fill beans message keeps coming up on jura capresso impressa s9

You need to open the grinder, it`s probably packed with old fine powdered coffee that blocks the outlet. Clean this out and try again. Since it works normal when you use pre-ground coffee, there shouldn`t be any problems with any other parts.

Let me know if you want a description for have to open and clean the grinder.

Good luck!

No coffee will dispenses

Hi, We had a similar problem and it turns out the beans we were using were too oily and clogging up the works. We solved it by using a slightly more coarse grind (and brewing a stronger cup), and by buying only the best beans (oily beans don't make coffee stronger, just means they aren't good beans and by roasting longer can make the coffee taste stronger). Try Barefoot Coffee Roasters (I don't work for them, just love their coffee). We also use the cleaning tablet more often than prompted, and clean the inside of the flap when we dump the grinds. Good luck. Great coffee, but finicky machine!
