Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows Vista. I need to restore it to factory settings. I did this one time a couple of years ago, but don't remember how I did it. I do remember it took me forever to figure it out, I wish I had wrote it down. I have the Dell Windows Vista DVD, and the discs for drivers, programs, etc. I just don't know what to do with them. I tried putting in the Windows DVD, then restarting the computer, and booting from CD ROM. The only thing that happens is, it says "Windows is loading files", or something like that, with a white bar moving back and forth at the bottom. Then, when it gets done, after about 2 minutes, the laptop shuts off. Then it doesn't come back on, even after 15 minutes. So I tried some other things. I tapped the F8 at startup before the logo appeared. I got an advanced boot menu, but there was no option for repair computer. Or to restore. There isn't anything I can use on F2 or F12 either. There is a drive on my computer called Recovery. On this drive is a folder with Dell things, and one folder said tools. In this tool folder is a application that says PCrestore. I tried it, it wanted me to run it as administrator, so I did. I clicked to restore, and after the bar moved about 1 and a half times, it stops, and says error. So how can I do a system restore, I do have all the discs that I got from Dell when I was still under warranty. Someone please help. I've got some bad things on this laptop, like something called Antispyware Soft, which I heard is a rogue program or virus. That and a bunch of other problems.

Thanks for being so descriptive about the problem you are having with the system. Since the laptop is shutting down and does not come after 15 mins. First you need to run the diagnostics on the system.
1. Shutdown the laptop disconnect it from the AC adapter and remove the battery.
2. Press the power button for 10 sec( this done to remove any residual charge from the motherboard)
3. Re-insert the battery and Re-connect the Ac adapter.
4. Press the Fn key and power button to run the diagnostics.
Note down and repost any error messages.

Want to restore to factory settings. running windows 7 ultimate

There are a couple of ways to Restore the system to the factory image. It depends on the system. Some older systems you would start the computer and press CNTRL+F11 and choose to restore. Other systems you would start the computer and TAP the F8 key and choose "Repair Your Computer" and follow the prompts to restore. Newer systems use a program called Dell Datasafe Local Backup accessed from the F8 advanced menu.

I have a dell involve laptop while i was trying to set back to factory specks i got locked out and it wont let me access any thing with out my administrator password and i don't no it what can i do to save...

No laptop is trashed when a password is lost. It just takes a little time to find out how to get into the system. I'll assume it is running XP Home that was originally installed on it from the specs I saw when researching. I'll also assume the password is not the one necessary to get into the BIOS CMOS setup- that one can normally be cleared by removing the CMOS battery and letting it set for a few hours or longer so the information is lost. The OS password can be cleared by making a bootable disk for that purpose. I have a Unix CD program that I made from information I downloaded from the Internet. You can do the same if you have access to a CD burner on another computer, say a friend's or one at work. I can get you the program's name if that's the route you want to take.

I have exactly the same problem :-(((

On this link: "" try to check of what OS that you are using, if it is Windows XP or Windows Vista. If you are using Windows Vista and still not compatible things happen that you need to backup all of your important files and have to do a DELL PC RESTORE. Restoring your computer settings from factory. Everything on it will be gone. So again, make sure to backup the files. But in a case still nothing happens, then have to call Dell technical support for assistance. There would be a scenario that your audio device is working badly that needs to be replace which is the motherboard. Thank you.

How do i restore my dell inspiron 1501 to factory settings without the disc? i lost it and im goin nuts...

Contact Dell to purchase a Recovery CD for your model Dell laptop.
The other way is to do a new Windows install. Use a Windows installation CD, it must match the Windows version on the Windows Product Code label on the bottom of your laptop.
You will also need to download the device drivers for your model laptop from the Dell WEB support site, make sure the download the correct XP or Vista version of the drivers that match the Windows version you are installing.
