Question about Poulan 42-Inch Steel Deck 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 6 Speed

Identifying the engine used in a Poulan PO16542 mower

What kind of engine is used in a Poulan PO16542 16.5HP rider mower? I believe the carburetor needs servicing due to being stored without draining the old fuel. I have replaced the spark plug, checked the fuel lines and filters, and it does start and run for about two seconds when I put a small amount of gas directly into the carb. There is an identification plate on the engine, but it is unreadable.

I have a 20' push mower by Poulan and I am trying to change the oil. I do not see a regular oil plug under it, could it be one of the small bolts? What could I use as an alternate than the Poulan oil...

I do not use the drain plug under the engine. With fuel run out if it can tip into the carburetor, I will tip the mower to drain from the fill so I can drain it into a catch pan. You can use any 30W motor oil in the engine.

I hope this helps.

Poulan pro push mower is chugging and shaking. I put in new spark plug, clean filter and cleaned exaust. What else can I do to get it running smooth?

Over 90 percent of the problems are caused by a carburetor that needs a good cleaning. The new ethanol gas cannot sit in the carb or it gets clogged. If you do not know how to do it, then it's better left to a professional, due to the tiny parts when you take it apart. There are many Youtube "how-to" videos if you want to do it yourself. I believe the Poulan's use a standard Briggs and Stratton engine and once you do one carb successfully, you'll soon be a pro, if you're so inclined. I was afraid of them when I started and now I'm paying my bills doing them in my sleep. Best of luck to you. Here's a link to a basic carb rebuild video on an older Briggs engine. They're all a bit different, but the basics are the same: Best of luck to you. James.

Home Depot will not handle this problem for you, you will have to go direct with the manufacturer. Call the number on the manual or on the product info tag.

Mower starts after prime, runs for a few seconds then stops, had it serviced two months ago.

Hello,

My name is Dane and I am going to try to help you solve your problem. I believe that you have clogged jets/passages inside of your carburetor. This can happen when an engine gets little use, allowing the fuel in the system to get old and begin breaking down. If fuel is left in a carburetor for more than a year, it can eventually turn into a jelly like consistency, and clog the fuel system.

The other way to block these passages is to allow dirt or other debris to enter the fuel tank. This will be picked up through the fuel line, also clogging the system. The easiest way to determine if you have a clogged fuel system is to remove the air cleaner/filter, and spray a little starting fluid directly into the carburetor opening, and crank the engine. Do not use a large amount of starting fluid. If it starts for a couple of seconds and then quits, you've found your problem. A clogged carburetor. If not, you have another problem. Using too much can harm your engine.

You will probably need to remove, disassemble, soak, and use compressed air to blow out the jets in your carburetor. Pay close attention to how the carburetor is attached to the engine. Make a drawing if you need to or take some pictures. Remove the carburetor from the engine. You will need to disassemble the carburetor as far as possible and put it in some Carburetor cleaning solution. You can get this at any auto parts store. Do not place rubber parts in the solution. Allow it to soak in cleaner as directed, and then blow out the ports and jets with compressed air before you assemble and reinstall it.I hope I've helped. If you found this information useful, please leave feedback as deserved. Thank you! Dane

I need to know how to take out the camshaft and how to put in a new one on a 15 horse poulan rider

you must remove engine from unit. then loosen rocker arms and remove push rods. remove oil sump from bottom of engine. use a screwdriver to push lifters up,(a bit of grease helps them to stay up, very helpful at reassembly) and remove camshaft.
