To tell you the truth, if you want to upgrade, upgrade the speakers. Speakers are the single most important component to good sound.
The key word is efficiency...
As a professional sound engineer I can tell you this: wattage, as used as a comparison tool, is nothing. Speaker sensitivity is the important spec. Note this. A speaker that is rated at 300 watts, but the sensitivity is rated at 90 db is actually considerably lower than a speaker rated at 100 watts but the sensitivity is 94 db. This also means you do not have to spend as much money for an amplifier that has a high wattage rating.
Things like frequency response, etc are mildly important, but as I suggest to anyone is how the sound is to you. When making any audio purchase, take music you are familiar with...

Do you have a High Def cable box and Tv? if so you would use and HDMI cable from your cable box to your tv, then run an optical audio or coax audio from your cable box to your surrond system. Depends on which plug you have on both for the audio portion. If you dont have HD tv than you would run cable wire from cable box to tv then run red and white audio from cable box to surround system, to listen to it you would select aux channel.
Hope this Helps.

Philips DVP 3256 has 6 outputs which takes in RCA connectors
Altec lansing VS3251 has 3 STEREO outputs.
Buy 3 nos of STEREO (female) to RCA (male) cables
1. Connect the Altec's green wire to first stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Front left and Front right
2. Connect the Altec's black wire to second stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Rear left and Rear right
3. Connect the Altec's orange wire to third stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Centre/Sub woofer. Interchange RCA ends if the Subwoofer sounds dull.
