Let the computer run for 15 minutes then switch it off, wait a minute, and then start it up again. If there is a repeated clicking sound then it is more than likely that your hard drive is broken and you will need to take it to a qualified technician to look at it.

Have you tried the harddisk on another computer to make sure it is functional? It can also be related to one of the following things:
1. If the harddisk is formatted for MAC and you use windows it might not show up unless you install special software.
2. The USB outlet on the computer might be faulty (try another one).
3. The cable might not work. In time they can break inside without any exterior signs.
4. Are you sure the harddisk is receiving power or is it supposed to get that through the USB cable? If it is, then the voltage in the USB on the computer, might not be high enough. Then check if there is an USB with yellow interior. That will have more juice than the rest.

How do you reset power management on the ibook g3

For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
  1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
  2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
  3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Only perform a PMU reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation.

Hitachi deskstar, SATA 3.0 500gb drive just stopped showing on any pc, mac, but had never made any noises or problems previously... Please help me I have so much that I need on there, it just remains...

So, you mean it does make noises and has problems nowadays ? If it does, it probably means there's a serious problem going on at your harddisk. Making sound often refers to a bad motor or even heads, which are crashing at the silicon platters.

Maybe the harddisk does get spinning, which you will notice immediately, if you hold the HDD in your hand. The gyroscopic effect of the rotating platters makes the harddisk feel a little heavier. If there's no strange noise, then please check the datacable, if it is connected to the harddisk. If it is, you even should study the connector at the disk, when unplugged. Check if the connector is still firmly connected to the PCB(*) of the harddisk.
(*) PCB is the small printboard where all tiny electronic components are soldered to.

If this is an external harddisk, built into an USB-enclosure, you might consider to switch it to another USB-enclosure. Maybe there's a malfunction in the electronics of this USB-enclosure. If you don't have an enclosure at hand, you can still built it into your computer, for further testing.

Slow to respond, and freezes up,makes clicking noises

A clicking noise, most of the time is a sign that the hard drive is going bad. Get a back up of any important files. Trust me, I ignored the signs and lost important info.

Making a noise, sounds like disk skipping, not responsive

It sounds like you have major physical problems. Are you mac or pc? if mac, try getting a data rescue program (data rescue, disk warrior) and a hard drive large enough to back-up recovered files from the BigDisk. Disconnect any other external drive except the one you're looking to recover (and the one you'll be backing up to), use the rescue software to scan for devices, and analyze the drive according to the software instructions (this can be time consuming) - if the drive is still mountable, it should be able to recover your files.

Datarecovery

I met this kind of problem before, the MOST effective way is to if you can rely on some so-called data recovery software for help.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem!
