I upgraded from a 486 ISA based machine to an Athlon XP.
After moving the hard drive to the new computer, the upgrade procedure went
something like.
1. boot machine using old kernel,
2. recompile kernel
3. put new kernel in /boot
4. run lilo
5. Boot new kernel
5. Repeat from (2) to sort out minor problems like, APM support.
This was with my heavily hacked Slackware install.
Note that I didn't have full functionality when I booted the old kernel - I
had no PCI
support and therefore no network card just for starters...
