Question about Palm m500, m505 & m515 Install CD (pa1456)

4 Answers

When I try to perform the first hotsync on my Palm m500 (bought recently, cheaply since it's an old model), I get the message: "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

    Thanks for your answer.

    1) I used 4.0.1, which is what is on the disk that came with the Palm m500. Should that be OK?
    2) How can I tell I am using the correct driver?

  • alizadov Apr 27, 2010

Neither installing 4.1.4 over the existing installation, nor doing a clean installation worked.

  • alizadov Apr 27, 2010

I tried both types of installation (over the current one, and clean). Neither worked.

Taking out the battery worked! Thank you!

Remember I am trying my FIRST hotsync on an m500.

The most important things to me in the sync are to get my Memos and Contacts from my desktop Outlook 2003. I always want the desktop to override the Palm. In the hotsync manager, I have set the Memo Pad and Address Book (I hope that is the same as Outlook Contacts).

My Mail conduit is set to Outlook (above '97).

When I perform the hotsync with "Mail" set to Do Nothing, the hotsync completes but no info whatsoever gets onto the Palm.

When I perform the hotsync with my mail set to Desktop Overrides Handheld, the hotsync crashes when it is trying to synchronize the mail. And of course no info gets to the Palm.

I would like to explore other solutions than sending the Palm for repair. I live outside the US so sending and receiving is an issue. Also, I bought the Palm for $40 and am not sure I want to invest money into fixing it.

normally, when you install the desktop software, it installs the palm USB drivers as well. therefore, first,- download version 4.1.4 above and install it over that one you already have, this way, it will upgrade the drivers as well. If doesn't work, do a clean installation.i.e, uninstall your old version software completely, and install 4.1.4. all should work out.

    Regards

You could specify by name the expert you want to help you. otherwise, in this case, i recommend you perform a hard reset. follow instructions on this page, scroll down to palm m series (m500). also ensure that you have installed the version 4.1.4 i recommended above.

    Regards

Look ....I got an idea just to check the functionality ...of the other things involved...
I dont think that it is damaged...probably it is an issue of streaming or so...I suspect the computer to have something and crash the sync...so take the driver and go to another computer ....ask a friend or so ...if you can try one with a much compatible windows...cause if you are on windows 7 it is kinda have issues of compatibility ...thinking that the model of your device it is a little older it is a possibility ...So, my advice is to try one with XP on ...ask a friend or so...Just install the driver and try a sync in another computer ...if it works ..it means that the firewall or the antivirus or the operation system in your computer is to blame...alo may be damaged or something ...and it do not sustain the buffering for the job ...anyway ..in short change the computer for a try ..and see whats happening ...if it does the same at least you know that it is the device to blame and we will see what sis to be done ..maybe we try a program to do that another than the one you have ...

This message is not due to a setup its due to the palm not communicating with the hotsyc cradle and that right there is no fun in the park. you will need to have the pda repaired www.pdarepair.com does a excellent job and there not affiliated with fixya but i have had nothing but good reports from them and they do get the job done right.

sorry for the bad news but this is what happens with these palms and its unfortunate. Based on your error message and what you told me the word stated are facts and not fiction if you do not trust my word call palm or pdarepair.

Thanks and please be considerate and press the accept button for my efforts.

    1. Wow!

I feel you got a communication's problem being a palm expert and have 15 years in the field. I also feel you been there a quite a good time "expert shopping" I feel fixya has gave you allot of face time with this issue hence this is where the "moderator comes in with the gavel" I am trying to help you here and without full investigation before just trowing me in the recycle bin i want you to welcome the fact that the palm is not working with the sync software. Shoot try another computer and find the same facts.

I am just laying it down as it is. $40 for a palm that does not sycn might not be a fault of all the experts that got shopped here. You tried what:

    Palm 4.0

took out the battery (wow that worked?)

    un installed and reinstalled

but do not want to visit or give face time to someone that has experience in repair of these units that is visiting 100 percent fact about your unfortunate problem. I am trying to get this resolved.

Try a different machine i bet you get the same outcome.

thanks hope things goes well in the future.

Hi,
Please find some simple solutions which may solve the problem below:
1- First please update your software to sync. Or reinstalling the software may solve this problem.
2- Be sure that, before synchronizing, the Hot Sync Manager application must be running.
3- Disconnect your palm, remove the both side of the cable from the device and PC. Clean the hot sync connector on the palm blowing on the connector to remove the debris if any. Check the connectors to PC.
4- Remove the battery of your palm and replace back to do soft reset. And also restart your PC. Sometimes this simple action may prevent the other program conflicts and solves the problem.
5- Delete the pending messages, alarms and other planned duties on your palm device not to conflict to sync.

Hope these simple solutions help you.
Regards.

    Hello my friend,

As I read from previous messages removing the battery solved connection problem, but you wanted to ask something else. Unfortunately I didn't get any comment from you. I waited for a long time.

I think a problem occurred with FixYa software. This happened twice in a day. Now I will try to solve program conflicts in FixYa :(( :))

When you leave the contact, I can not see your comments any more.

Anyway this is not your fault.

    Good luck.

    Hello again,

I received a comment message from you right
now. When I click to the link on your message to see your comment, I saw a
message that your question is currently locked to another expert.

I do not know whether continue my first solution
or not. you are unlocked because of unexpected error.

That's why I will send my other comments
anyway. Please find the rest of my comments below. Because I don't like to quit
even if it is not my fault.

    Please find some important
info below which you may need to find and solve your sync problem with PC. You
can update your software to the version 4.1.4.

    This Palm Desktop 4.1.4 file
includes both Palm Desktop and HotsSnc Manager software.

    Palm Desktop manages your
personal information. HotSync Manager controls synchronization.

    If you sync with Microsoft
Outlook as you write in your comments, you should do it by installing this
    software.

But not to have difficulties and manage to synchronize the data you must have the requirements written
    below:

    - You need Windows 98/ME/2000
or Windows XP (32-bit edition) operating system.

    - And the computer must have;
50 MB available hard disk space, USB
    port. Not
    compatible with dual-CPU
or multiple-CPU computers. (But compatible dual-core or multi-core processor
    computers)

IMPORTANT: The other operating systems and versions
(even the latest versions such as Windows 7) except written above and different version of Palm Desktop
software (only version 4.1.4 is compatible with your Palm M500 except the original) are not compatible. They may cause
    synchronization problem.

    Now please update your
software with the software Palm Desktop 4.1.4. which is compatible with your
    Palm M500.

    To do that:

and find the file named "
PalmDesktopWin414EN.zip" in the list in the opened Web Page which I uploaded for
    you.

    - Click the Download link
below the filename and save it your disk.

    - Extract the .zip file and
    install the extracted ".exe" file.
(If you don't have the original CD, you can install this file, but you
may be unable to sync some multimedia items.)

    - Do not un-install previous
versions of Palm Desktop. If you have an existing version of Palm Desktop on
your PC, leave it as-is, and install this version on top of it. (Otherwise you
may lost your previously saved data)

    - Restart your PC and quit all
    running
    applications before
    installing
    this software.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Alizadov,

    If you installed the Palm
Desktop 4.1.4 and you couldn't enable synchronization between a Palm
device and Microsoft Outlook would you please try the Palm Desktop 414E which
you can find clicking the same link here.

    This time, download and
install the file named "PD414_E_setup.zip" (Palm Desktop 4.1.4E and HotSync
    Manager (Windows)).

    Normally your software CD
with the version 4.0 should be better
but I think the operating system of your computer doesn't compatible with it.

At the same time, if this
extended version 4.1.4.e of software is installed an older version of Palm like
your palm, you can only be able to sync with the fields on the palm. The
extended PIM fields such as birthday, website, repeating tasks will not sync.

To be able to use outlook
sync with the Palm software version 4.1.4 which I uploaded in my previous comment, you
have to find or purchase to install third party sync software such as "PocketMirror Standard,
IntelliSync Handheld Edition for Individuals or CompanionLink for
Outlook&Palm handhelds". In this case, you must install Palm Desktop
and HotSync Manager first, and then install one of the the third-party software.

    And as another solution:

    And if you are using
    USB connection t
    ry to change the USB
port that you used. Or if you are using serial port connection, try to swap the
port over and use the second serial port.

    Check your cables.

    Check the windows' security settings.

As you know, sometimes a very simple answer may
    solve the problem.

If I can't solve this problem I can't sleep all
    night :).

    Good luck my dear friend.

    Hi,

I could not upload the file named "PD414_E_setup.zip" (Palm Desktop 4.1.4E andHotSync Manager (Windows) which I give you in may last comment.

Because the google web site limit was over. If you downloaded the previous uploaded file, I can delete it and upload the file version 4.1.4.E.

NOTE: I rented a domain and hosting from a company and currently trying to develop my own unlimited web site to be able to upload such files without any problem. Sorry for that.
For now, If you inform me that you downloaded the previous file, I will immediately delete it and upload the latest file which I gave in the last link.

    Thanks.

Did you manage to install the software that I send you?

Welcome to Fixya

Sounds like the problem is the LCd screen already. Have you tried doing a hard reset to your palm? The data in your palm can only be transferred using Hotsync. Try uninstall/install the software again to the new computer. May i know the Windows OS of the new computer and what is the model of your Palm.

Thank you for using FIxya!

Palm OS-based PDA freezes up

If you’re not sure what file or application is causing the problem, you’ll need to perform a hard reset. Before you do this, be sure to perform a HotSync so your data is properly backed up (the hard reset will erase all data on the PDA). To perform a hard reset, press the power button while performing a soft reset. Replace the power button when you see the Palm/PalmOne logo and press the Up button when prompted.

Next, find your Backup folder on the desktop. You’ll usually find this folder located within your user folder, which is usually located in either C:\Program Files\Palm, C:\Program Files\palmOne, or C:\Program Files\Handspring. Your personal folder will resemble the user name you selected for your device. If you used your first and last name, for instance, your user folder will likely be the first six letters of your first name followed by the first letter of your last name. Rename the Backup file to Backup.old and HotSync your Palm to restore personal data. Because you renamed your Backup folder, no applications or additional files will be restored at this point. Instead, an empty new Backup folder will appear. Move applications from your Backup.old folder into the new Backup folder one at a time and HotSync your Palm. After each HotSync, try to reproduce the problem. If the problem doesn’t reappear, move on to the next file. Delete any files that cause a problem after they are moved onto your PDA.

Enjoy! Pls.rate me if it's done. Thanks.

Kindly regards,
-micro

Sounds like we have a little issue here. The first thing I would suggest, would be to use a different charger, maybe check to see if the electric cord is hooked up right. Try initiating a HotSync operation. Good luck!

Hotsync problem

With a USB 1.1 machine .. try this ...My work around - disconnect ALL USB devices from the computer, NO multiport hubs, make a direct USB connection to one of the available open ports, then reboot the computer. Upon gaining control, then try to hotsync. If I had any other items connected or ran any other programs prior to hotsync, I was not able to perform a successful hotsync. USB device not recognized or has malfunctioned on hotsync

Last week, windoze started barking the same complaint at me. A hard reset (of my Tungsten E) solved the problem. Caution: A hard reset (keep the power button pressed while performing a normal reset. Only release power button, when Palm logo screen appears. The press up-key) delete ALL data (even the identity, i.e. hotsync ID) from your palm - so be sure to have a recent backup!

Ibm workpad sync & port issues help!

You have your Hotsync software set to use a com port instead of USB. Right Click on the Hotsync icon on the lower right part of your PC desktop and change it to USB and you should be good to go. The IBM Workpad is just like a Palm. I have the Workpad C500 which is actually a Palm M500. If you have a Workpad C505 it is a Palm M505. Anything you can buy for a Palm M500 will work with a C500 and anything you get for a M505 will work with a C505. If you do NOT have a USB Sync cable for your Workpad I suggest you do what I did... Just get a combination Sync and charge USB cable at Staples or Best Buy for your M500 or M505 and use it. It was about 20 but you can get them cheaper on the Net. I hope this helps you!

Connection is lost (6410)

First open the HotSync custom menu, start changing conduits to do nothing. Work your way down the list until you end up with a complete HotSync. If you still have the 6410 error, unplug the USB adapter, replug and try your HotSync again. The USB adapter may be the week link in this equation.

Once u see the hotsync manager at the bottom right corner , right click on that , left click on setup , left click on local , choose a different com port , reduce the speed to 9600 , click on ok restart ur pc and try hotsyncin , if it doesnt work try the previous step again and do not forget to restart ur pc , and then perform a hs , it will work ....
