We were able to get it to recline by pushing on the hidden lever below the word "hair" on the lable with a screw driver. there were no clogs or anything impeding this mechanism. but it still did want to work once we put it upright and tried to recline it again. we opened it again and I cleaned it with canned air. still did not work. my boyfriend sprayed WD 40 in there and it worked!!!!! Since it was under warranty we at least saved ourselves a 2 hours drive to the repair place and back. I am very dissappointed that someone on this website could not have told us to try these things. we know nothing about vacuums but were able to fix it. people like me just want a list of simple things to try before we waste our time and money going to a repair shop. you dont have to know exactly what is wrong with the vacuum to give someone a list of things to try to get it to work .

I have exactly the same problem with my DC28....just where is the word "hair"???? Called the help line who suggested we bring it in to a service center...45 min away!

I just fixed my vacuum with the same issue. There was a little debris getting in the way of the release mechanism. See the attached photo for location of this release.

Indeed! It worked - you don't even see it! I used scissors! What makes it stick and not recline? I was afraid that I was going to break it!

You DO NOT have to take your machine to a "certified technician" to fix this problem. See the photo above????? Simply slide a thin, flat-head screwdriver down and magically the machine will release. NOW: once it\'s released, simply examine the area where your screwdriver JUST slid down...see the dirt and gunk? DON\'T follow the MANY suggestions of adding lubricant "which only works for a short while" (by their own admission) WIPE AWAY THE DIRT AND GUNK and voilia! YOU are now a "certified technician" and you didn\'t have to sit through any technical school to get there! You go girl!!!!!!!

The latch you are aiming for is (1) in the attached picture. You are going to slide it in near point (2) when the vacuum is upright. For my vacuum, there was almost no dirt and gunk, but it was enough to cause this symptom and the solution Cassi provided worked perfectly. I was caller 179 in line with the Dyson phone support line for this just this morning.

Hi there its Darran at Dyson.

Difficult one to give advice on as its impossible to know what is causing this. It wuold be worth checking that the soleplate and brush bar area underneath the head are all correctly assembled as this could be interfering with the upright locking mechanism.

If everything seems to be ok, you may find it useful to get in touch with us directly as your machine should still be under warranty. The Helpline number is on your machine but in case you dont have it to hand, the number is 1866MYDYSON.

Kind regards
Darran

    Hi there.

I am glad you were able to resolve this problem.

Unfortunately, as a company we cannot give out verbal or written instructions on how to fit or access electrical or mechanical components, or information on servicing your machine. This is because this should only be carried out by a trained electrician, a Dyson service engineer or an elected service agent. The same applies if a mechanical part requires removal, or an electrical component needs adjusting.

I appreciate your frustration, but hope that you understand and again, I am glad to hear that you have abeen able to resolve this problem with your Dyson vacuum cleaner.

    Kind regards

    Darran

with the economy the way it is I taught myself how to fix dyson vacuums, but have 5 with this same problem. I spray wd-40, and it refclines about 5 times, and they all freeze back up again. I know with wd-40 you have to move the moving parts a few times which is why I moved them 5 times right after spraying, and then they freeze again. The mechanism on these isn't the best, but dyson vacuums are easy to repair even if you have no clue what you are doing. I took a saw to the one I have cause the handle wouldn't pull out even with a hammer hammering from the bottom, so I sawed it off, and bought a new handle, and hose.

I have a dyson dc 28 and I can't release the handle from the base so I can vacuum

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty reclining your DC28.

It's possible this could occur if an item such as a pen or pencil has been accidentally vacuumed up, and is jamming the changeover valve mechanism. This is easy to check for - after turning off and unplugging the vacuum, lie the machine on its side and open the duct inspection port, then remove any objects or debris:

If you can't find anything, but continue to experience difficulty reclining your vacuum, please get in touch with our experts directly so we can provide further assistance. You can reach us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Dyson will not recline

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty reclining your DC28. This can sometimes be caused if an object - for example, a pen that's accidentally been vacuumed up - is jamming the changeover valve. This is easy to check for using the airway inspection port:

If you're unable to find anything jamming the changeover valve but continue to have difficulty reclining your vacuum, please get in touch directly so our experts can provide further assistance. If a repair or a replacement part is needed we can also confirm if this is covered under our 5-year warranty. You can reach us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA)

The handle will not release to lower the handle it is stuck in the upright position dc 28 animal model

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the problem you're having with your DC28. You should find the cleaner reclines into the vacuum position easily when you place a foot on the cleaner head and lower the handle. If it's not doing this, please get in touch with us free on 1866MYDYSON, or email askdysonUS@dyson.com. One of our experts will be happy to assist you further.
