OK here's what to do, get yourself some Servisol Video 40. Then take of the top cover and spray the servisol in places where the tape comes into contact. Get some good quality cotton buds and wipe the same areas. Try not to disturb the grease where the guides move out to the head.
Insure the Servisol has evaporated before you put a tape in. It might be a good idea to give the head drum one last spray (without a wipe) after you have finished all the other areas.
PS if anyone smokes where the VCR is housed, you will have a lot of cleaning to do!
