There is no information on Canon site on aligning print head. I have changed cartridges 3 times (one is dried up, one set sitting in a drawer for about a year, still in foil packaging, unopened and third brand new)
Bought de-natured alcohol to clean everything just in case ink had dried in somewhere
Still have alarm flashing and 'put in cartridge' on display How do I align print head when it wont recognise cartridge is installed?
    Thanks
    PJ

Do a printhead alignment. This will let the printer know your cartridges are full. Here is a link for your manual if you want one. If this doesn't fix the problem just add a coment and I'll be glad to come back and help you out. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=8000

Replaced ink and wrong catridge message comes up

What I would do is check your maunal to see what cartridge you need for your printer and purchase this cartridge. If you have not need color cartridges before than you wont need them now. Just make sure you inserted the right ink cartridge for your printer

Shows black ink empty after new cartridge inserted

Replacing the cartridge should resolve this problem: Follow these steps to replace the cartridge:

Installing / Replacing the BJ Cartridge Follow this procedure to replace the BJ cartridge:
1. Make sure the MultiPASS is plugged in.
2. Open the document tray.
3. Lift the document guides to open the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

If the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) does not open easily, slide the document guides outward and then open the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).
Or slide the Document Feed Lever to either the automatic or manual setting.
4. Pressthingtopress.gif. If installing the BJ Cartridge for the first time, skip to step 6.

Caution: Do not try to manually move or stop the cartridge holder since this may damage the unit. Do not touch the components shown or any metal parts since this may adversely affect operation of the unit and/or affect print quality.

The MultiPASS has an automatic protection feature that helps keep it from overheating. If the cartridge holder does not move, unplug the MultiPASS and let it cool for several minutes. Then plug it in again.
Press thingtopress.gifto move the cartridge holder.

5. Raise the blue cartridge lock lever on the cartridge holder and remove the BJ cartridge.

Caution: Discard the old BJ cartridge immediately according to the local laws and regulations for disposal of consumables. You may want to place it in a plastic bag to keep any residual ink from spilling. Spilled ink can stain any surface; protect yourself and your work area. If removing a BJ cartridge to use one of the optional BJ cartridges, be sure to store the BJ cartridge in the container provided with your MultiPASS. Otherwise the ink will dry and affect print quality.

Caution: Discard the cap and tape. Never attempt to reattach them to the BJ cartridge print head. Install the BJ cartridge immediately after removing the cap and tape. Spilled ink can stain any surface; protect yourself and your work area.
7. With the label facing outward, insert the BJ cartridge into the cartridge holder. Lower the blue cartridge lock lever until it locks into position.

The cartridge holder moves to its home position on the right side of the unit and begins cleaning the BJ cartridge print head. This process takes about 55 seconds.

Caution: Do not try to manually move or stop the cartridge holder since this may damage the unit.
9. Close the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).
10. Close the document tray.
Note: If you need to unplug the MultiPASS, wait until the unit is in standby mode (date and receive mode displayed in the LCD). Otherwise the cartridge holder may not be in its home position causing the BJ cartridge to remain uncapped and dry out.

You could remove the color cartridge altogether, or just select "Print in grey scale" from the printer properties box.
