do I have to replace the whole motor or just the centrifugal switch? It is an electric dryer and sounds like it could be it. The click sound is coming from the bottom of the dryer. Am I safe to assume it is coming from the motor?

  • Marisamar711 Apr 26, 2010

Thanks. The model no. is 110.74842400 and the serial no. is MR 2805396

  • Marisamar711 Apr 26, 2010

Thanks, again. Yes, I just recalled it is a gas dryer. Will do. I live in San Diego, CA. Can you give me an estimate on both parts, just in case. I will listen again to see where the noise is coming from.

  • Marisamar711 Apr 26, 2010

Thanks, Phil. Awesome. Will do. I will let you know how it works out.

Either the moister control sensor is weak or its good.
If good the vent is clogged up full of lint and needs to be torn apart and cleaned all the way out to the outside vent. The sensor will shut down any dryer that has a clogged vent. If the vent is clear the sensor is at fault then and needs a replacement

The sensor works as a saftey for fire hazzards as well as you can tell by know fron reading this information

If it is a gas dryer it is most likely the gas valve coils. They can work for a while typically when cold, then break down and fail once they warm up.

The other thing that can do this is on gas or electric models is the centrifugal switch inside the motor. If the motor slows down after running for a bit it can turn off the heat.

The last thing that could cause it would be the high limit on electric dryers or the thermal fuse on a gas dryer. If the venting is plugged up with lint and no air is flowing or poor air to outside the heat builds up to fast in the dryer and it can trip the limit control off.

That would be the most likely failure as the motor is down there, yes the motor would have to be replaced as it is what is slowing down causing the switch to open up. They are one piece and cannot be purchased separately. If you have your complete model number from the tag on the front just inside the door I can look up the part number for you and get you a ballpark price on a motor.

  • Philip Apr 26, 2010

This is the part number for the motor 279827

I would suggest looking around the web for the best price. What part of the country are you in? I might know a good parts supplier.

Now that I look at this model it is a gas dryer. Saying that I would suspect the coils again first. The coil part number is 279834 and they are much cheaper.

The way you can tell is listen for the click or clunk, if it from the right side bottom it is the motor, if it is the left side is the coil.

The gas valve coils should run about $20.00

The motor should run about $110.00

A reputable service company will charge about $110.00 labor to make either one of these repairs. I do not have any contacts down there to recommend but be sure to use new parts vs. rebuild and price shop.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Phil

Where is the thermal fuse on a series 80 kenmore electric dryer. will this act as though the power is off? How can i test the fuse?

Yes, but there are several thermal limiters, they should reset when the unit cools, so likely that is not what is happening.... Forcefully turn the breaker FULLY off, and then back on, and test again...

The thermal limiters are located along the air flow path, typically downstream of your burner, the purpose is to prevent overheating and fire. These limiters stop the HEATING element and not the drum motor...
