I have a Zenith R49W36 and i had convergance problems. I ordered the tv repair kit and replaced the parts and now the television continously turns on and off. Please help.

if the TV was coming on before you installed the kit, the logical thing to assume is that something you installed in that process is at fault.
The most likely place to look would be at the pins of the convergence chips themselves.
Look for a bit of sloppy solder where two pins may have got shorted together.
Or just as likely, a pin that was left unsoldered.
both of these issue could be causing your shutdown problem.

I had to adjust the convergence. But if I turn the TV off, the convergence is off again when I turn the TV back on.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

Magnavox 51" Projection TV Red Convergence

he is most likely trying to rip you off. You need to replace the convergence ICs. Theres a kit at the following link for your model that has both ICs and the 12 feed resistors plus step by step instructions to do the repair. Heres the link. this is the kit your model uses. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/phillips-dptv-305-dptv345-convergence-repair-kit/cName/convergence-repair-kits
A convergence problem such as your describing can blow a fuse if you try adjusting it when the ICs fail. and its all centerd on the SSM panel the LSB panel wont be affected. Alot of TV repair men dont have a clue they just try to sell you some boards instead of repair the issue.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.
