Question about Sony DSR-11 DV / Mini DV VCR

Playing Tape to End Requires Head Cleaning Every Time

Hello,

The heads to my Sony DSR-11 seem to need cleaning every time a tape plays to the end. If I just play the tape up to the last 4 minutes or so, it plays fine over and over again, but if I let it play until it stops (at the end of the tape) it looses time code, or plays with bars and pixelation, or not at all...

If I run a head cleaning tape it seems to work fine again??

I keep all of my machines clean, so I don't suspect cross contamination, nor do any of my other decks display any problems playing the same tapes??

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the tips!

The tapes are not damaged, so the unit isn't mangling them at least.

It's weird though, when the DSR-11 is first fired up and a tape is played for the first time, it plays through without a glitch, and I can replay it as long as I don't let it get all the way to the end of the tape.

Also weird, if it does play to the end of the tape, either I'll get bands and pixelation, or no timecode & no playback... it doesn't even see the tape.

It seems your tracking needs to be looked at.also have a look at the tape open front section button at side slide open with your finger.look at the tape toward the light,if the edge of the tape is a bit wavey not straight you will need an alighnment as well.

Hi,
Two possibilities, either player needs tape path adjustment or requires drum (video head) replacement.
Above said solution requires expertise and Sony trained tech will do this job with proper tools.
Thanks.

DSR 11 won't record DV tape to its end

You need to use longer tapes. The DER-11 is a DVCAM deck which when recording, uses a faster tape speed then mini DV. Think of your older VCR's. They had SP, two hours, and EP or SLP, which would be six hours. The SP speed would give a better picture. DVCAM is more like an SP recording except digital and a lot better. More information is laid down on the tape.

You'll have to jump up to the full size DVCAM tapes in order to record the full hour.

Sony recomends to use Video Head Cleaning Cassette in Playback mode. Video Head is still dirty in your camera thats why you can't see D8 picture.

Sony DSR-1800 Lost Lock

check the condition of the pinch roller. a bad pinch roller can cause this problem - a tape plays for several minutes, then has problems. what happens is the tape slowly moves up or down on the roller instead of traveling in a straight path. this is caused by the roller becoming worn or glazed and not being able to provide traction to pull the tape through.
