Check for a spring on your tensioner pulley there should be some holes on it for a spring to connect too and back onto the frame these sometimes come off and dont keep the belt tight maybe diagram will show this tensioner

Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

How do I determine why the blades will not engage on my mower

With the mower turned off and the deck at its lowest setting, check the top of the deck for any debris like rocks or sticks. Then watch the top of the deck while you move the engage lever. If nothing is moving, you either need to adjust the cable, reattach the cable, or install a new cable. If you see the lever with the pulley on it moving, when the engage lever is locked on, check the tightness of the belt. If it's loose, that is your problem and it could be a stretched belt.

Blades not disengaging

is the blade engagement system a lever or a switch?
If a lever , then look on the deck where the pulley applies tension to the drive belt for a sticking point. the cable from the lever will be attached to it and it should move smoothly in and out of drive position. sounds like the pulley is not retracting when cable is released. check for sticking of pulley arm or maybe a missing return to idle/off spring is broken or missing.
The deck should disengage as soon as the tension on the cable is removed.

if electric, the clutch itself is always getting power, so a swithc circuit fault is to be expected.

When I finish mowing yard I disengage mower blades but they keep on turning why

If this mower has a manual lever that has to be pushed up in order to engage the blades then check the tension pulley that connects to the lever cable on the top of the deck,it probably need to be lubricated or cleaned in order to move freely back to the normal position.

My blades wont engage and just hear click sound?

No permanent solution, but you probably can get by once by "riding" the clutch engagement lever - pushing it only part way forward and holding onto it.

I have a 18.5 hp 42" electric start craftsman mower. when i went to engage the blades the lever was harder to move than usual and once it was engaged nothing happened. blades not turning! please help.

When you move the lever and engage the blades you are also engaging the belt that drives the blades and sits on top of the mowing deck. Chances are that belt either came off one or more rollers, or broke. The only way to check it out is to get down and look on the top of the mowing deck. Get back and let me know what you find.
