Question about Western Digital 250GB ELEMENTS EXTERNAL USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive
Have a 3 month old WD Scorpio Blue, 250 GB/GO. One day I get message "a disk read error occurred" and no way to continue. WD website says a setting could have changed. My son ran some diagnostics on it and is confident it is not a hardware issue. Is there some way to reset the settings or check them? I can boot up using Knoppix and see my files.
Use your restore disk, or if you have a Windows OS disk, bootup with that.
When you see the screen that gives you an option to "Repair Windows" hit the "R" key. You will be taken to a DOS prompt. Choose the Volume you want to repair (Usually number 1) then it will prompt you for an Administrator password. If you have never put one on the system, simply hit Enter. The it will take you to "C:\Windows" Type in the following...
"CHKDSK /R" (without the quote marks and hit Enter. Let chkdsk utility see if it can repair the volume. It will prompt you when it is finished.
