Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.

There is a "bendex drive" in your starter and it pushes the gear into the flywheel when the starter turns. It needs to be replaced because it obviously isn't working properly. The starter basically has to come apart to do this so you may be just as far ahead to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

It could be the flywheel, but try putting different size shims in between the starter and engine. The starter might be a little to tight against the flywheel. You should be able to get the starter shims at any auto parts store, or ask where you can get some.

Starter Problem

if you drop the trans. dust cover on the bottom of the bell housing you should dee your fly wheel. Place your starter in the position and line up the shims (if needed) . adjust the starter in enough to where it clears the torque converter and shim outward if needed
