HELP! - My fridge freezer is not cooling - clicking sound heard but motor not coming on

Hello Michelle;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.
Lets fix this together. The clicking sound that you hear is referred to as a overload relay. The overload relay is an electrical component that starts and stops you compressor. It is very common for the overload relay to fail over time.
First, locate and purchase a overload relay. If you have a Trible's
in your area that's great, if not Lander's, Sear's, .... If you can wait a few days you can get the part over the internet for half price or less.
I do not have your model number otherwise I would give you the part number.
Having the part, pull the refrigerator out where you can move freely behind it. Unplug the refrigerator. There is a bottom cover that you need to remove. This cover is fastened either with Philips or hex head screws. Remove the cover. Open the new overload relay parts and lay them before you. Study and observe them.
There is a black box on the side of the compressor which holds the overload relay. The box is held on with either metal or wire clips. Using a flat head screw driver pop the clips off. Compare the parts on the compressor with what you have. Note the location of the connecting components on the 3 compressor pins, and the first piece to put on the compressor is the white piece with the 'V'. Using your flat head screw driver, wedge the components off the compressor (Remember how they go back on). Do not pull on the wires - just the connector ends. Replace the components. Shake the white piece - if it rattles or is burned it is bad. If you can not get the black box cover back on - not necessary, it's a dust shield.
Note: If you have a LG, bottom freezer 599, do not bother. Both the overload relay & compressor need to be replaced. Buy new, not LG.

Refrigerator not cooling, compressor runs for 10 sec

you need to replace the "ptc-overload-relay" located on the body of the freon compressor as they supply all the incoming power to the unit, the compressor relay gets weak and can't stay "latched" to keep the compressor running, you probably hear a clicking sound from there too,all you need do is unplug the old part off the compressor and plug in a replacement

Fridge question

Sounds like you mad have a bad relay or overload on the compressor. I would also check your condenser fan motor to make sure its running and blowing air on the compressor to cool it. If its not running the compressor may be overheating and shutting off on its overload. If the condenser fan motor is running I would assume that you would need a new relay and overload it will come in a kit. Usually it will make a clicking sound when the compressor is TRYING to start and then shuts off on its overload if the start components are bad.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Amana side by side, buzzing, no fan in fridge.

that sound is the relay/overload. it is trying to start the compressor. the problem is either that relay or the compressor itself

MY FRIDGE FREEZER KEEPS TRIPPING OFF AND COOLING DOWN

Replace the overload/relay . This is the piece plugged onto the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . This is if you are hearing an occasional " click " . It is easily replaceable .

If you do not hear a "click" , tap on the thermostat ( knob that adjusts the temp ) , and see if the freezer fan comes on . If so , then replace the thermostat .

Fridge not cooling, freezer not freezing, buzzing sound

with any luck this is you overload and relay
it is the plug on the actual compressor, this is very easy to replace, if you replace it and it does exactly the same thing its your internal relay and your compressor is done....

Fridge/Freezer keps turning itself off

Pull the refrig out and remove the back panel . If the fan motor , cooling the compressor is working , then the overload/relay is bad . This is the piece plugged onto the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires attached to it . You can easily replace . If you had given the brand and complete model number , I could have given you the part number .

If the fan is not running , the overload will click off , thereby , causing the compressor to get too hot , making the overload click off .

Will not keep cool any more freezer or fefrigerator

How to check stuff>
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL) or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR PROBLEM).
. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Compressor not coming on,temp is warm in freezer/fridge

You have a defective start relay on the compressor. That is your clicking sound. The overload relay is disengaging when you hear the click.
Replace the compressor start relay.
