Question about Poulan "Poulan" Push Mower

1 Answer

It won't keep going.

I pump the gas, pull the cord and it fires up for a couple seconds and dies. This is the first time out after the winter on a Poulan Pro rotary push lawn mower. I just filled up with gas. I'm guessing a new spark plug might be needed.

Engine runs but back fires then dies when put under load

Rebuild the carburetor. Just replace the old gaskets, diaphragms, needle and seat. You can get a rebuild kit from your local lawm mower repair shop. also, don't run last years gas and if you keep gas in the tank over the winter buy a winterizer and pour it in the tank when starts to get cold. Hope this helps!

Tip

Pressure washer

I have repaired hundreds of pressure washer pumps.( Winterizing)Always tip up pressure washer to get out most of the water. Then purchase pump armor. This is like anti-freeze.If not available use light weight oil.(mineral oil is o.k.Tip back washer and pour a little in.Then pull motor start cord a couple of times and your safe for the winter.

Modern fuel injected vehicles will only run the pump for a couple of seconds to pressurize the fuel system at stat-up. The pump won't run after that until the engine is running or you are actively engaging the starter. The fuel pump and relay are doing exactly what they are supposed to do. Now, that doesn't mean the pump is building pressure like it should but the pump running for a second then shutting off after you first turn on the key is normal operation. You may have entered it, but I can see no information about what vehicle you are working on other than it is a truck. More information about the vehicle would help. In the mean time, I feel a compression check is an order and you should take a look at the oil to make sure there isn't any water mixed in. Some history would help as well, like if you have done any type of service in the last month, when the basic maintainence was done, how many miles are on it, etc.

Engine will not run. This car sat thru the winter in a unheated garage. I have spark, I have fresh gas. Thinking that the fuel pump was dry, I turned the egnition key to on position with out cranking...

try some starting fluid (either).

Inspect the wiring at the fuel pump (if not in the tank).

Alternately, have the psi tested on the fuel line.

Are you certain there is enough fuel and the car is not uneven (as on a hill preventing a low fuel availability to get to the fuel pump to pump such that it can pump the fuel?)

Another stupid question - have you looked at any of your sensors -- such as the crankshaft positioning sensor?

This should give you a couple ideas anyway..
Best regards

My 1989 buick park avenue keeps dying. a friend ran a test on it and it said the fuel pump was the problem, but the fuel pump fuse keeps bowing too... Would this be a short somewhere or the fuel pump...

My first thought is that you have wires shorting out somewhere, probably right above the gas tank. Either way, you're going to have to pull the gas tank off to find it. Usually, when a fuel pump dies, it just doesn't work, and won't normally blow a fuse. Pull the tank down, inspect the wiring, and change the fuel pump if the wires check out okay.

I have a ryobi 825 weed eater than will fire right up run for about 30 seconds to a couple of minutes the die. will fire right back up and then the same. any ideas?

did you drain the gas for the winter? an did it work fine when you put it away for winter? if it worked fine last year your problem might be bad gas and or oil. try and drain the gas and get fresh gas and oil. I have heard some people put plastic wrap under the gas cap keep gas from leaking out and that keeps air from the tank and creates a vacuum seal and gas cant get to the Carburetor. If you have not changed the spark plug in a few years that might help but it sounds like a fuel or fuel line problem.

I have an 07 VStar 1100 Classic. It has sit in my garage over the winter with one start up and short ride about a month ago. I now can not start it. It originally fired up for a split second then dies,...

First check you fuel filter . Bad, old gas can cause the filter to clog. If it is clear, then just drain the gas from the line you already pulled the filter from. Refill the tank with freah gas adding two ounces of sea foam per gallon of gas. If it fires up then it was bad gas and the sea foam will clean out any other **** the bad fuel left behind.

HELLO: It could be a frozen gas line and or stopped up filter, filter is on drivers side under the truck, looks like over sized small coke can with a connection on both ends. Thats the first place I would check.

It won't start.

Prime away... on a chainsaw it does NOT squirt fuel into carb. It draws fuel from tank, through carb, and returns it to tank.
Using the choke however will flood it in a second once it has fired. with a good fuel supply, 99.5 % of chainsaw won't start problems are flooded. Lou
