Question about Carver PM950 Amplifier

1 Answer

My Carver M-1.5t is emitting a rapid pulsing sound on both speakers -- low but annoying. I bought it new in around 1983. Is it fixable?

Have you added any new electronics ANYWHERE in your home? Anything like a security system, or computer networking? Make sure your amp is properly grounded; if it's on a power strip, try plugging it directly into the outlet.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try plugging it directly into a socket.

Thanks for the suggestions. No new systems in the house. I tried plugging the amp directly into the wall, same fluttering sound.

This could be related to the power supply it is the
magnetic field variety that has a thyristor controlling its input check if the voltage supply to the amp outputs is varying when the pulsing is heard. if so
the control curcuit could be at fault.

Is it normal for carver power amps to have a slight hum? I have a carver-55x

Hum can come from a jillion different places. Is this hum coming from the unit with no speakers connected, or is it heard through the speakers? What sources are being used? What cables? Are thereany common sources of interference near? Troubleshooting is difficult without much information.

My pedal is brand new and cuts out after about ten minutes. I also bought the delay pedal and it cuts out around the same time while making a rapid pulsing sound.

This sounds like you MIGHT be running on batteries and they are near depleted... Pedals go through batteries pretty fast. Use power adapters and make SURE to use the right ones as some pedals require different voltages and types of current.

We have a buzzing sound coming from the monitor speakers when we go to ANY internet site. It is just loud enough to be annoying!

LOL. This is a common, easily solveable problem. Remove your cellphone or anything that emits radiation of any sort from the general area. Don't believe me? send a text message while sitting net to your speakers. It does this even if you arent sending a message because your phone sends intermittent signals to the cell tower. the radiation being emitted from the phone does weird things with the magnets inside the speakers.

Sub woofer buzzes all the time, do I have to replace the speaker or can this be repaired?

ur sub wont buzz due to bad speaker. either u have a faulty preamp or power amp. yes it can be repaired and will not cost much. if it is loud and annoying, get it repaired. sometimes subs emit low hum when powered up. this is the way the are desinged.

My turntable connect to Carver Preamp, I bought a

If you can hear music with the volume up, but like it was turned down low (from the power amp), then yes there is something up with it. If it's the same on both left & right channels, then it's something common to both. For instance the power supply, or an IC that has both channels going in it.
If however the power amp does produce sound normally with another device, then either the turntable has a fault, or the pre-amp has, perhaps on the pre-amp inside it for the cartridge.

I have just bought a new bose 901 speaker system which included equalizer. I am not sure how to connect the equalizer to my receiver Denon 3808. I need help.

http://products.bose.com/pdf/customer_service/owners/901_guide.pdf

Be advised, this speaker system requires its own dedicated two channels of signal preamplification and power amplification and the required Active EQ is not to be used in the signal path of anything else. I have them as my Main Left and Right Speakers in a 7.1 set-up, but I'm using a 5-channel external Carver Power Amp to drive them, a sSb and the Rear Surrounds. The Active EQ is between the Receiver's Main L&R Preamp Outputs and the two Carver Amp channels that drive the 901's. Don't think you can just add the 901's into your living room and enjoy multichannel sound. Search around fixya, I have written extensively on this subject.

connect right channel speakers to amp left out if the problem fixed you will have a problem in amp itself.

Sound is Pulsating when music plays

Ahh, I have these speakers and its common when you have the volume knob turned all the way down, to fix it, turn the volume REALLY low in windows, so that way you have to turn the volume knob on the speaker control up to 50-100%. And you will have better sound..... No pulsing
