Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.

And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.

Also clean The purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, Lexmark, Caonon and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing.

That is where you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it.
It also has an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

So clean all under where the heads are parked and on IP6600D models you can take out the heads just by clipping them out, and then clean well.

It seems you mistook Carriage Jam as Paper Jam, but they are different issues. Carriage jam means the carriage that carries the cartridges is jammed which needs to be moved or be cleared manually after opening the door.

Please follow the instructions mentioned here (Click Here) [source HP Support].

Good Luck.

My 7310 indicates a carriage jam. I've cleared all paper and verified no loose paper, dust etc is present and it still reads carriage jam. What should I do?

Inside your printer the ink cartridges ride in the carriage. If you look closely, there is a plastic strip just behind the carriage with closely spaced little lines on it. If the strip gets dirty with dust or ink, you may get that error. Gently clean the entire strip with a rag moistened with water. be sure the entire strip is clean. Move the carriage back and forth to get at all of it. Then see if that doesn't work.

Have a HP officejet 7310 with error message that reads "carriage jam" this occured after clearing a paper jam???

You have to make sure you have gotten all the scraps out, and if you put fingerprints on the clear strip behind the carriage, you will need to clean them off with a Q-tip.

Carriage Jam

If you can get the covers off. push down on piece that is blocking the cartridges. Otherwise, it is uneconomical to repair.

Without knowing what type of printer we are dealing with, what paper try layout etc etc.. I would suggest you try replacing your pickup rollers.
