The degauss operates only when you switch the TV on (not from standby). You might hear a noise when you switch it on like a "boing" sound and this indicates the degauss circuit is functioning.

If however you have green and purple on the screen then the degauss posistor has failed and will need replacing.

Hope this goes some way to helping you

Yes, I agree with that about having to unplug the TV for 30 minutes - 100%. But I went for the more common cause, the degauss posistor failing.

Part of what is not mentioned here is that you may need to unplug the television from the power and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, power it up again. This will help to reset the auto degauss for the power up mode.

The tube responsible for that color needs to be degaussed manually since the auto degaussing function is apparently not working properly.

Do you mean degauss? There has to be a degauss button to perform this function.

How to Degauss

LCD flat panel monitors do not have or need a degauss function. The older CRT monitors had the degauss button to remove any magnetism that built up in the metal frame that would cause distortion. LCD monitors do not rely on magnetic fields so no degauss button. If your display is showing strange patterns and text the most likely cause is a bad video card. First try a different monitor on your card. I would bet the display is bad on it too. It you find this problem just replace your video card and the issue should go away.

My Sony KV-36BR200 has poor color resolution. I have used the remote to adjust the various picture functions and even tried the reset procedure with no improvement.Could the degaussing not be functioning?...

Yes, the first thing you should check is the degaussing coil - just check that the thermistor is doing its job of powering it correctly. Then, if only the colors appear to have problems, you should check the phase shift on the oscillator of the NTSC discriminator, small errors there can cause dramatic changes in the colors.
But if the general brightness of the screen is lower than it used to be (as i suspect it is) then this is a sign that the tube is near death: the cannons for the primary colors have aged at a different level and the difference has grown beyond what the white balance system of the tv is capable of compensate. The only way to fix that is to replace the tube, impossible since its no longer made for a long time now.
Sorry, it's time for a new tv.

My colour is going green and purple

Your tube Shadow Mask may have got magnetised and need to be degaussed. Some newer TVs will have a "degauss" function in the menu. This is most likely being caused by components. Do you have anything sitting directly on or next to your TV, such as VCR, Cable Box, DVR or stereo speakers? If this just happened recently you may not have damaged the picture yet. And if you move the components it may clear up otherwise you will have to purchase or make a degausser. You TV may have a degauss button. This will eliminate or minimize magnetic fields in the screen and should remove the de-coloration.

Also try turning off your TV at the mains and unplug it for at least two three hours, your TV should degauss the tube at power up. If this doesn't work you need to take it to the shop to get it diagnosed.

Please get back to us if you have any further query or else accept the solution.

Magnavox 20mt4405/17 piece of junk!

Hello sletak, This problem is actually common. Your degaussing coil has malfunctioned, causing the power supply to become unstable which in trun is effecting the memory settings in the processor. You have threen problems in one so lets start by looking at the overall cause first 1) degaussing coil going bad (shorted then opened) Replace this and the thermistor that is attached to the degaussing circuitry. 2) power supply instability (power surge from the degaussing circuit) replace the damaged components in the power supply section. Troubleshoot this thoroughly. 3) after fixing the power supply and the degaussing components you will need to manually degauss the TV and then use the auto-degaussing function to do the rest. I hope this helps, Thank you, Shuttle83

Poor picture and color quality

Maybe the tube needs degaussed? Was there a magnet next to it? A degausser will fix that.

I don't have the service manual copy. I was servicing these sets more than 6 years ago when I was working with a service contractor for warranty repairs.

The degausser is very simple. The AC is switched on with the relay. The relay feeds the degausser in series with the thermisistor. There is not very much involved to trace this out by following the traces on the circuit board.

The common fault is that the thermistor goes bad. You can order this part from any of the parts distributors for Sony parts. I cannot remember the cost of the thermosistor, but I think that from Sony it was in the area of about ten dollars at the time.

It is very rare that the coil or the relay goes bad. On some rare occasions I have seen cold solder connections cause the degausser to not function.

Your set will work with no degausser working. You can order from any place that sells parts for TV service, a manual degaussing coil that plugs in to the AC. You can manualy degausse the CRT face several times per week. This should work out well.

Manual CRT degausser coil:

My preference is original parts. But, if you want to chance an after market part check the link below.

Donberg Electronics sells some types of thermistors:

In the service shop we used a manual degausser when were changing picture tubes. We needed to have the screen degaused very fast so that we can do the purity and convergence set-up.
